Sugar Addict

So, I am one month into the New Years resolutions and, so far so good. I am actually starting to enjoy running now, though I have a long way to go before a half marathon would be an option. I was a sprinter in high school so these long runs are hard to get used to but I'm trying, puffing away and dragging the feet at times but still moving forward.

One area that's hindering my progress is my diet. I have no problem eating healthy foods; I actually enjoy salads, fruits and veggies, even chicken on a regular basis. It's the SUGAR! Love, love, loooovvvee the sugar. I swear, it's like a drug, especially when I'm stressed or even bored I want something with the sweet stuff. However, I know this is so not good for me. Cutting out the soda would be a good start (yeah, I'm drinking a Dr. Pepper as I type..caffeine and sugar BONUS) but I also need some other good ideas for getting rid of my evil sugar demons.

Any ideas on some good ways to curb the sweet tooth? Any healthy alternatives?

Now I'm off for the evening run. Hopefully, the sugar high from the Dr. Pepper will make me swift and surefooted tonight. HA

Insomnia Attack

It's been a rough week so far. Since Sunday night, I have not been able to get a good night's sleep at all; right now I'm averaging 5 1/2 hours a night...I need a good 7 hours to feel human. Normally I can blame the excess caffeine, late night exercise or too much on my mind for lack of sleep but none of these seem to apply. I lie down for the night and....nothing, just stare at the ceiling. Getting a bit frustrated.

Any suggestions? Sleeping pills, hot bath, taping my eyes shut....I'm up for anything right now.

My Dear Inner Athlete,

We had a good start to the new year. I thought we were on the same page....getting up early, running, even some swimming in there, which requires so much more effort on my part what with the bigger gym bag and all. However, something is straining our relationship right now. I don't know how to say this delicately so I'll just be frank with you...

YOU ARE PISSING ME OFF! I've decided to put my foot down and issue some tough love. 1. We are going to bed at a decent time tonight, no exceptions. 2. You will NOT hit the snooze button at all tomorrow morning, nor will you encourage me to stay in bed and try to talk me into a late evening workout instead (we both know I won't do it). 3. Running will take place at least 2 days this week, that's final.

I'm sorry to be so harsh with you but I cannot take your subtle sabatages anymore. Let's work together and become the athlete we used to be. Hell, let's be even better.

Your BFF,

I love my Saturdays

What a beautiful day today! Mid-70's, nice breeze, sunny day...this is an "I love Florida" kind of day. This morning, Brian and I went out for breakfast on the beach at Luna Rosa in Deerfield Beach (best omelets I have ever had) and had a nice our or so walk on the beach. The Festival of Arts was there along the beachfront and we browsed all the paintings, sculptures, etc. there. Found a beautiful painting I really wanted; thank goodness the money was locked in the truck or I'd be about $200 poorer right now. Lots of great stuff to look at though.

This afternoon has been all about the book reading...just chillin' on the patio with a John Grisham book and watching Wilson trying to catch a squirrel. My little buddy is trying his damndest to climb a tree but no luck yet, folks!

Now I'm off to some more reading and will probably try to squeeze in a workout and some house cleaning before getting cleaned up for a girls night w/Megs., pizza and movie...I can't wait!

Early Bird Gets the Exercise Done

Well, I did manage to get Brian out of bed and into his walkin' shoes. We made it 2.2 miles before we had to head home and get ready for work. Thought I'd be tired today after the long day but I did pretty well. Either it was the fresh (and very foggy) air or 7 hours sleep is my magic number.

Oh, and if you have never had to experience Florida drivers, count yourself blessed. Thank God it does not snow or get icy down here cuz these freaking morons can't drive for shit! I kept chanting, "Get the hell out of my way, dammit!" Driving 35mph on the interstate is enough to make me put up a gun rack and shotgun in the car and start taking out some tires for drivers' sheer stupidity! (okay, I'm calm now)

Time to read my book and do some hula hooping...yep, you read that right. Have a good night!

I could blame it on the weather - it has rained the last couple of evenings, therefore preventing me from getting a run in.

I could blame the weekend houseguests - it's always hard to sneak in workouts with company in town.

I could even blame the washer/dryer - they did not wash my workout clothes, therefore preventing me from my progress.

Or....I could just look in the mirror and say SLACKER! It's Thursday and I have not done any exercising since Monday, when I snuck in a nice hour long walk and then jogged for 1/2 an hour. Since then, I have been coming home after work, having a nice, filling dinner and enjoying some recent movie purchases. So today I'm up nice and early and am going for a morning walk....going to try and get Brian to go too. He wanted to last night, let's see if he has the same enthusiasm this morning ;)

P.S. If you haven't seen 3:10 to Yuma, I recommend it. We also watched Saw IV; since we've seen the other three, we had to see this one too. Surprisingly good seeing as they had killed off the main characters in the previous one. Note to self: those with weaker stomaches need not apply as it is quite graphic. I swear they get more gruesome with each film.

Time to go walking!

This has not been a stellar week for me in the exercise department. I have only managed to get a run in on Tuesday and it wasn't very long since I tried to sneak it in before work. Have not gone to the gym, no swimming, not even situps at home. I'm just a lazy bum this week. Got the energy and ambition of an anemic slug. To top it off, I have been eating poorly too. Way too much fast food, chips, etc. That's usually how it works for me, though. If I don't exercise I don't eat well, either.

So, I'm going to try and get a walk in this morning. We are planning on doing a sightseeing boat cruise this afternoon with our guests and then bum around downtown Ft. Lauderdale.

For those of you who haven't been outside yet, it's nice and cool! Was about 59 degrees on my last check. Yeah! Great weather for my stroll. Maybe I'll bring Wilson, too.

Have a great day!

Celebrity Sighting

Last night Brian, his brother, his brother's friend and I went out on the town and headed to Hard Rock Casino. We walked around all the shops and stores for awhile and then went to the casino for some gambling (where I lost $40-damn). After an hour or so we started walking around the casino and made it to the Hard Rock's hotel entrance since there was a live band. All of a sudden you see a horde of photographers in a big cluster coming straight for the entrance. Brian and I snuck up close and we see Pamela Anderson coming in the hotel surrounded by bodyguards and paparazzi. Let me say, she looks damn good up close, too!

Kind of a nice highlight to our evening. Sorry guys, didn't get any pictures. Nor did we get any pics of the fabulous four transvestites who were enjoying the evening festivites outside Murphy's Law either. Tried to get Brian and his brother to take a picture with them but the refused. That would have been a nice one to send to the parents.

They are my favorite time of day. Everything is fresh and new...a whole new day to accomplish your goals or screw things up-anything is possible. It's always nice and quiet and I can get more done in the first two hours of the day than any other part of it. The only thing that puts a damper on a good mood in the morning is the anticipation of going to work. Ew.

Okay, so my favorite mornings are on the weekends. Guess I should trudge along and get ready for work now. Have a great Friday everyone!

Since I have no exciting news or interesting stories, here are a few tidbits about myself.

* I used to play the saxophone in high school. Loved it! I sometimes wish I still played now but unless you play in a band, it's not too much fun to play all by yourself.

* My favorite sport in high school was dance team (yes, it is a sport!) I loved the 2-a-day practices before competition, the outfits and standing ovations after a performance. It's one of the things I miss most. I was also in volleyball and track, where I ran 200 dash, 400 relay, 100 yard and 300 yard hurdles.

* I could spend an entire Saturday sitting outside on the patio with a good book.

* Love water sports, especially waterskiing, kneeboarding, jet skiing.

* I am the oldest sibling in my family, with a younger sister (27) and brother (25).

Ah, it feels so liberating to open up...maybe next time I'll let you in on my favorite color ;)

Week 3 Goals

To summarize, last week's goals went pretty well, although I did not quite accomplish everything I wanted still untidy and only did one day of swimming and 2 days of running but, overall, a pretty good week. Let's face it, if I accomplished everything I would be perfect and in no need to make any further goals for the rest of the year. HA!

So, for this week I am planning the following:
1. Running 3 days/week minimum - I am still working on building this one up from a walk/run status so I don't have any specific goals yet.

2. Clean that damn kitchen! Brian's brother comes into town on Thursday so at least I know I have to get it done by tomorrow night, along w/the rest of the house - no pressure.

3. Swim - 2 days for 30 min each. This one is tough cuz I really want to sneak it in in the a.m. but being at the gym by 5am does not work for me. Evenings you have to deal w/morons being stupid in the pool.

That should do it for now. Don't want to overload myself. I'm tired just thinking about it all. Good thing I have one run down already; went early this morning before work. Let's hope the evil procrastinator stays away from me so I can get through everything else.

Quote for the day: Friendship is like peeing on yourself: everyone can see it, but only you get the warm feeling that it brings.

Dog Park Drama/Comedy Laughs

You know, I always pictured the dog park as a nice place to relax and watch your dog make some friends...yeah, he may do some cannonballs in the wading pools (and you w/no towel) or sniff some butts for too long but overall, it has always been a relaxing experience. Not so yesterday.

There is nothing quite like arriving at the dog park to see the Humane Society and the ambulance there on scene to make you wonder, "What the hell?" Brian and I arrive at the dog park w/this very scene. After interviewing witnesses, we come to find out some loser abandoned his/her pit bull in the park and it got into a fight with another pit bull there. When the owner of the 2nd pit bull tried to break up the fight, she got bit by the abandoned pit bull. And of course there was added drama w/all the little dogs trying to get involved as well. No one was seriously hurt, thankfully, and the abandoned dog was taken way. We waited until the excitement subsided and then brought Wilson in to the park. He had his usual fun time and was enjoying the company of another pug until yet another huge pit bull came in and started getting a little to aggressive with them. And that was the last straw for us...back home to the safety of the backyard for Wilson!

Brian and I had a nice evening out on the town, too. We went to the Hard Rock Casino for some comedy (super funny stuff!) and then drove down to Ft. Lauderdale and enjoyed some dueling piano playing at "Howl at the Moon." All in all, a fun and eventful Saturday.

Today is laundry day with some good book reading in between. Hope everyone had a fabulous weekend.

I Hurt Everywhere!

I had planned to write a bit last night but I even my fingers hurt from this exercise high I'm on this week. Went for day 2 of running last went pretty well. Adriana and I went further distances running before succumbing to shortness of breath and walking. I think we did the run/walk for a total of 6 miles, 2.5 to 3 miles of running. As you can see, I am a mere novice at this and have not acquired the proper running terminology quite yet.

All I can say for last night and this morning is..ouch, I freaking hurt everywhere! I figured it would just be the legs that would take the brunt of the pain but I think my back and shoulders are the winner. Maybe I'm a tense runner or just need to work on my form. Definitely going to take today off from running and will try to sneak some time in tomorrow.

Time to get a nice cup of vanilla-flavored coffee, a blanket and a good book and head out to the patio for some morning enjoyment. Ah, I love Florida winters! Have a good day!

Thursday, January 10, 2008

So, today was the day...after much talking and debate, my friend Adriana and I decided today was the day to start our after work running schedule. So, after much hype throughout the day, we got the gym shorts on, laced the running shoes and psyched ourselves up for an evening run.

Now, neither one of us is a seasoned runner. In fact, this is a New Year's resolution for us both so we were not expecting to do too well. I was quite surprised at our progress. We started out with a fast walk and then ran for half a mile, fast walk, half mile run...quick rest...then ran for a mile and walked another mile. All in all, not a bad first day. Got to admit I was expecting much less. And having a nice ocean breeze and ocean view made the time go by quickly.

My legs are feeling it already but we are gonna lace up those running shoes again tomorrow and try another round. Hopefully the legs can keep up. Got to gain some distance and speed as she has already signed us both up for a 5k. I'm already tired just thinking about it!

Have a good evening!

Week 2 Goals

Week 1 of the new year went fairly well. I did work on my to-do list and was happily able to cross off a few items, although I will admit my procrastination monster did hinder my progress a couple days this week when mindless tv won out over chores. But not a bad beginning. I shall persevere!

Now it's time to set some small goals for Week 2. Here is what I have come up with so far:

1. Take down tree and Christmas decorations. Yes, I do realize it is well after Christmas and New Years but what can I say, I love all my snowman decorations.

2. 2 days: 30-45 minute swim (weather permitting)

3. 3 days: 20-30 minute run >I'm so new at this one that I'm not even ready for distance, although maybe having a distance goal would push me harder. Any suggestions?

4. Clean kitchen/dining room from top to bottom.

I think that should keep me busy for a few days. Hopefully I can keep my procrastination monster hidden in the closet so I can get through everything. Hope everyone has a great day!

Coworker From HELL

Ah, work. The place where we spend a minimum of 40 hours per week. It's tough enough some days going to work when you know you have a million things to do, 90% which is pushing a deadline, and you are constantly being pulled in 10 different directions by attorneys and fellow coworkers. But then, to put the icing on the cake, there is the "Coworker from HELL." This girl drives me crazy! She is one of the drama queens who thinks her job is the most important in the office (it's not) and who has an excuse, albeit lame, for everything she either does wrong or doesn't do at all. AHHHHHHH! It was so nice these last two weeks since she was out of town on vacation but today, she came back in full swing. The atmosphere changed in the office from low key and laid back to highly tense and stressful.

Bonus: I am the lucky devil that get's to sit right next to her! How to deal...I tried zoning her out, then ignored her completely and finally just told her to get to work so she wouldn't be so behind. Maybe tomorrow will be better. Or maybe I should bring some duct tape to work and have some fun. I'll keep you posted.

Quick Visit with Friends

It's always nice to have friends come visit. My friend, Dawn, and her boyfriend Tom, from my days in Chicago, came for a quick visit before going on a 5-night cruise to Jamaica and the Caymans. We picked them up from the airport at about 1:45am, came home and chatted until about 3pm and then took what felt like a catnap before doing some more catch up this morning. Then it was off for brunch and a scenic drive along the beach to the cruise ship where we dropped them off at 3pm. It was so nice to see her again, just wish it could have been longer. Too bad I couldn't sneak into her luggage and stow away on the ship! Guess I will have to make the trek up to Chicago this summer to have a longer visit.

Now I think I am ready for a nap. Hope everyone is enjoying their Saturday!

One of the great things about living in south Florida is the weather. Warm temps, nice ocean breeze coming from either east or west, being able to wear summer clothes and shoes year round...this is especially nice in the winter months when you know your family is battling the cold and snow.

Evidently Florida feels left out. It is frigging cold out right now! I got up early this morning to go for a walk/run, put on my shorts, t-shirt and sweatshirt, got the iPod ready and decided to check the temp. Uh, 35 degrees. Did I see that right? Rubbed my eyes a little and looked again. Nope, still says 35 degrees. That ended the morning excursion so I hung my head and went to the treadmill for 20 minutes. Thank goodness I didn't brave the swimming pool at the gym this morning (my gym's pool is an outdoor pool).

Oh, and bonus to this is since I am a tough Minnesotan who can handle the chilly temps, Brian and I did not turn on the heat yesterday thinking we would be fine. So, right now I am bundled up in sweats, sweatshirt and socks and look like I'm ready for snowmobiling. Lesson learned? Check.

Note to self: 35 degrees in Florida is the same as 35 degrees back home.

Dear Inner Athlete,

First of all, I would like to say I'm sorry. I have not been a good friend to you these past few years. It's not that I didn't miss you cuz I really have but there have been too many other distractions and I just didn't have any extra room for you in my life. Okay, I'll be honest...I probably could have found some spare time here and there but the powers of the tv were too great. Sorry.

But all that is going to change, Inner Athlete, for I am dedicating this year to you. We are going to become best friends again: swimming, biking, even running if that's what you want to do. Anything for you. All I ask in return is that you keep the muscle soreness to a minimum and don't require more than two early morning workouts a week.

Please forgive me for my past laziness and poor excuses and let's make a fresh start together. We can be a team again. Now let's seal our friendship with a nice bowl of oatmeal.

Your BFF,
