Yippee for May!

After moving around like an arthritic slug for most of April, I am ready to get out of this slump and get back into action. Don't get me wrong, I did manage to squeeze in a couple swims, couple gym workouts and walks aplenty, but nothing compared to the routine I would have liked. However, I am feeling rested and the muscles seem to be working pretty well post-accident so I think it's time to break out those workout clothes and get back in gear.

Time for some May fitness goals:

1. Run 3 times per week. Adriana and I are starting our running sessions again next week since her midterms will be over so I am dedicated to at least 2 running sessions with her per week. Can't wait to have my running buddy back!

2. Swim 2-3 days per week. I'm not going to put a definite time limit here because I am going to work on distance. I would like to be able to swim 5 miles in an hour, which is 150 laps (down and back in 25 meter pool). Swimming is great for the joints and burns approx. 900 calories per hour. Not too shabby.

3. Fix the bike tire(yep, haven't done that yet) so I can start biking this weekend. I may even pull out the roller blades but need the tires rotated.

4. Some type of gym workout at least 3 days a week. This will probably coincide with the pool time.

5. Portion control. I need to watch what I'm eating but also the amount of food.

I'm pretty excited to get back in the swing of things. I have been feeling like a slug for so long, it'll be nice to shake things up again. The good beach time is right around the corner and I am sooo not ready yet.

P.S. Also, for those of us going on the cruise, there's only 294 days to get prettified (yep, I counted) and I want to look good for this trip. Later gators!

Date Night in the Cheap Seats

Tuesday? Really? That's it? Huh, felt later in the week. Oh well. So, since Brian and I hardly saw each other this past weekend, we decided to have a little date night tonight. Yep, the good old-fashioned dinner and a movie. That would be dinner at Subway, whereby I had a scrumptious 6 inch turkey sub, followed by a showing of Leatherheads at the $.99 theater. Yep, that's how we roll. Brian got some stale popcorn and I had a pretzel with cheese. The movie was pretty good, not an Oscar winner but for a buck, you can't lose.

How we stacked up:

Dinner for two at Subway: $11.00

Movie tickets: $1.98

Movie Refreshments: $11.75

Enjoying a movie without the loud high school students: Priceless

Another Memorable Monday

What better way to start off the week than to have a root canal. Don't be jealous now, I'm sure if you refuse to listen to the dentist when he says to get a cavity fixed LAST YEAR, then you, too, can share in my enjoyment. So, that was my morning. I managed to make it to work by 1pm and put in a good half day's work, although I did get some laughs from my coworkers when I tried to smile and resembled The Joker. At least I can bring some joy to others, huh!

Sooo, since it hurts too much to chew, I had some yummy soup for din din and Brian has just run out to get me a slice of cake. Yes, I know, bad food choice but oh so tasty! At least it's just one slice so I can only devour so many calories (too many, I'm sure) and that will hopefully take care of the sweet tooth. Hmm, maybe that's how I got into this predicament in the first place.

Weekend Tidbits

Overall, it has been an active yet pleasant weekend. Friday night I went out with a couple girls from work for a bite to eat and then we headed to the movies for Smart People. It had it's funny moments but not sure if it was really worth the $9.75. More of a rental or cheap theater kind of movie.

Saturday was spent at the office; what can you do...sometimes duty calls, so I had to miss the beach birthday bash for Jess and Jerry. Sorry guys! I did manage to get in a 3 mile walk and hit the swimming pool for 75 laps before heading off to Hard Rock with a couple of friends for the evening. Hard Rock is always a good time but gets very crowded by night's end. For those of you unfamiliar with south florida, we have the Hard Rock Casino with a ton of shops, bars and restaurants all grouped together. So, we spent the evening at a great Irish pub, Murphy's Law, and had some drinks and enjoyed the live band. They were awesome! Lots of great 80s and 90s hits and, due to Bon Jovi being in town, they did manage to do 3 of his hits as well. Good times.

So today, on my relaxing Sunday, I have finished about half my chores (laundry, cleaning house, potting my new plants and cleaning the deck area) and now I just have to get in the grocery shopping, return some movies and...relax! Maybe I'll sneak some reading in there, too.

Hooray for Friday

Yeah, it's Friday and I am sooo ready! Well, I tried really hard to stick with my goals posted on Wednesday and managed to succeed with most of them. The caffeine ended my perfect streak, though. See, it was "take your children to work" day yesterday and we had quite the daycare going on. Nothing like a big group of kids ranging from 5-17 with nothing to do for most of the day to make you need that extra caffeine boost! Most of them were well-behaved but by the end of the day, they were getting antsy...hurdling recycling cans and playing Murder (wtf?) in the conference room. I think this concept would go much better if management would have some tasks for them to do but we haven't evolved to that level yet. Needless to say, I had 3 heaping cups of joe yesterday instead of the solo like I wanted. Today is another day.

I did manage to get out for a nice 3.5 mile walk last night. It's so great that the days are longer so I can come home, eat, let the food settle and still get an hour walk in before the sun sets. The evenings are still pretty decent (not too much heat/humidity yet) so they are quite enjoyable...for now. Took Wilson for a quick walk too; for a little dog, he sure is strong! He's pulling me from one end of the sidewalk to the other to make sure he sniffs everything. Gotta love him.

I'm just hoping for a quiet, mostly stress-free work day to be followed by a relaxing evening. The arm pain is feeling much better and usually only acts up if I exert myself too much. The neck pain is still troublesome and I think the ortho is going to have to take a look.

Time to skedaddle. Have a happy friday everyone.

Lifestyle Changes

It's been said that to truly accomplish a goal and, more importantly, make it stick is to figure out a way to make your goal(s) into a way of life. This is important with any aspect of life, but for today, I am focusing on weight.

Now, I know I want to lose weight. This has been a lovely struggle and constant area of stress for me for the last 3-4 years. I think I find it so difficult because it did not used to always be like this. I was a slim, trim 106-110 pounds for quite some time. I had the great abs, strong arms and legs and had lots of energy...I swear I was a relative of the energizer bunny at one time. I attribute this to a high metabolism, healthy eating, regular exercise and the being a swim instructor, where I was in the pool for 6-8 hours a day.

Don't get me wrong, there were some ups and downs with the weight in college (late night eating and drinking will do that) but I still maintained a decent weight overall. Soon, however, life happened. I finished with college and eventually got into my paralegal career whereby I spend a majority of my day sitting. I don't get those long, 2 hour workouts in anymore and all the biking and rollerblading has flown the coop. Also, the food has changed drastically. I never used to drink coffee and was not a big fan of fast food. I used to stop eating by 6pm and would only allow a healthy snack in the evenings if famished. I only ate plain popcorn at the movie theaters and stuck to diet soda.

So, where am I at today? Take the last paragraph and reverse it! hahaha That's pretty much where I'm sitting now. So, although I can talk about what I want to do and make my lists about how to achieve my goals, the real challenge is going to be making the necessary lifestyle changes to get permanently change my outlook on myself and how I lose weight. Some of the changes I plan to make are:

1. Only one coffee in the a.m. Too much caffeine bothers my stomach anyway and, since I drink the foo-foo stuff with lots of calories, I don't need that stuff throughout the day.

2. Exercise for a minimum of one hour, 4 days a week. Swim for 30-45 minutes 2/days a week.

3. Must be in bed by 11pm on "school" nights.

4. Drink at least 64 ounces of water/day.

5. Cut out the fast food.

That's a start at least. If I put too many out there, I might get overwhelmed. I think this is a good foundation of changes to make and I will add on in a month or so when I have a good handle on these. Good luck to everyone in their endeavors!

Tuesday Schmoozday

Yep, just another day here. Wilson has been pacing the house with his reindeer in his mouth for about 20 minutes now. I think it's because he was outside when Brian went into the garage and now he can't figure out where he went. I guess the reindeer is supposed to help him. Gotta love the little guy!

Not too much excitement here. I'm really dragging today, not sure if it's due to the non-stop medication I've been on, the rough weekend, a boring day at work, or if I'm coming down with a cold. Maybe it's a little bit of it all. Needless to say, I may need a cup of joe just to make to 10pm. I feel physically drained today and I've got no exercise to blame it on and work wasn't that stressful today, either.

Oh well, tomorrow is hump day and I'm hoping tonight's rest will allow me to get some exercise in tomorrow. I really want to start running again-who would have thought I would miss it?

Shout out to Jess: Happy 30th Birthday! You rock!

Hello Monday

I always hope for good things on Mondays cuz I think they get a bad rap sometimes. I'm starting to realize that the bad rap is well-deserved. Work....ah work. It's a tough relationship we have had as of late. I could tell we were in the full moon range on Friday and today's phone calls were not much better. If I had known there would have been so much phone time, I probably would not have taken the job. Now, I'm in a dilemna. I work for a well-known company with great opportunity for growth down the road (if I ever left the state, that is) but do I want to hang onto the job for that possibility one day or do I look for something better now? I suppose it never hurts to look so I should at least keep my eyes open, huh.

The good news was I got to leave early for a dentist appt...was just supposed to be a routine filling. Ha! After the dentist got halfway through, he stated the cavity had made its way to the root and I would be needing a root canal. Just what I was hoping to avoid. Not because they are so terrible but due to my job. See, my wonderful office manager does not let us take an hour or two off when needed; we have to take a half day off whenever we need to leave. That really eats into personal and vacation time when you have lots of doctor/dentist appts. It's just so frustrating since I have my heart set on going home for Christmas and this accident and all these appts are making my trip shorter and shorter.

So, tonight I'm taking it easy since the dental work has given me a raging headache that I can't shake. I'm going to hit the gym again tomorrow and try to get myself back on a schedule again. I'm missing my routines. later gators

Back in Action

So, I decided that today was the day to hit the gym again. It's been almost 3 weeks and I've only got in a walk here and there so I was definitely ready for some action. I managed 30 minutes on the elliptical machine and then hit the pool for 50 laps of freestyle/breaststroke. I didn't feel much pain on the ellipse but I could sure feel those sore muscles/ligaments in the pool. I'm a bit sore now but still feel good about going.

I'm hoping to dust off the Garmin tomorrow for a nice long walk-no running yet, I'm not quite ready for that yet. Have a great night everyone!
My Garmin has a layer of dust on it. Need I say more?

Take the good with the bad

Don't days seemed to be filled with both good and bad moments? Seems like we have to have things go both ways to get through the day on an even keel. Today, my bad news is that my lovely SunPass has died. Suddenly. And it probably died 2 days ago and I didn't realize it. After I put $30 on the damn thing, although the transponder has yet to show it (maybe due to it's death). It's only about a year old and should last much longer than this but Brian got mine on sale so I'm wondering if they refurbish these things or something--we even changed the battery and still, nothing. So, I'm crossing my fingers that I don't get a nice violation notice/ticket in the mail for racing through the tolls like a madwoman.

As for my good news, I received a call from the car dealership and they have finally got all the parts for the truck and have started the repairs. Yay! I'm hoping I get it back sometime early next month. It's so depressing to be making this first car payment with no car to show for it!

Anyone else have a stressful day at work? I swear there was something in the air today because my phone did not stop ringing with angry or crying people today. It was one of those days where one questions their chosen profession. Although, I think all jobs hit that point every once in awhile. Needless to say, I was glad when the clock said 5pm and I could mosey on outta there!

Now it's time for a bit of reading and then a new episode of The Office. Have a nice night everyone!

Tuesday, April 15, 2008

Ahhh...a cold front just came through south florida! I am in my jeans, t-shirt and sweatshirt and enjoying a warm cup of coffee. It's almost down to 60 degrees and I think I'll have to get the socks on if it dips any lower. Did I mention there is a brisk breeze out there too? Brrrrr. Seriously people, when did the girl from northern MN become this much of a weather sissy?

On another note, I have finally got the yearly doctor and dental checkups done. Doctor went well..I guess everything looks pretty good (accident injuries not included), so I got that going for me, which is good. Dentist visit was great. I went to a new place today, where the crew goes and I really like them. They are very thorough and informative and said my teeth looked great! Except for one cavity, which will be fixed on Monday. Since I haven't had a proper checkup for over a year, I'll take it!

Tonight, I have a massage scheduled to hopefully loosen up these tight muscles around the shoulder area. It's my first massage so I'm hoping for good results. Considering how stressed out and tense I am, I feel sorry for the maseuse. After that, I have Deadliest Catch, Real Housewives and Workout to watch. Reality tv addiction anyone?

Where does the time go?

Do you ever have things you say you want to do or places you want to go but you never seem to fit them in? I sure do. I'd love to fit them all in but it's amazing how quickly time flies by...I can't believe we are already half way through April!

So, some of my ponderings were:

- I want to start bike riding again. I used to do bike ride on a regular basis in high school and my early college years but just stopped doing it once I left MN (and my bike was stolen). I think it's time to jump on once a week or so and try to find some bike trails here in the flatlands.

-Kayaking. Love, love love to kayak. Just don't like the expense of a good kayak but I'm hoping to get one soon so I can paddle out and enjoy the ocean, and it's a great arm workout.

-More beach time. I don't even have to be in the water, just chilling on the beach and listening to the waves is enjoyable for me. I only live about 25 minutes from the beach and haven't been there in 2-3 months. It's tough when the evenings fly by so quickly and sometimes weekends are filled with errands or laziness. Now that it's warming up here again (low 90's over the weekend), it's time to set some time aside and get out there.

-Kickboxing. I would like to take some good kickboxing classes. Now, I'm not talking about cardio kickboxing at the gym where it's just different movements. I want the punching bags and drill sargeant instructor, too. These classes are all over but I am trying to find some where the prices are sky-high.

I'd like to start training for another race, too, but I really need to let the body finish healing before I start that. Alrighty, time to skeedaddle and take Wilson for a walk. Later gators!

Weekend Recap

Well, it was a pretty nice and relaxing weekend. Friday night was spent a friend's art show. She had so many beautiful things that I just had to have one! As soon as I get it home, I will take a picture of it for show and tell.

Saturday was a pretty lazy day...one of those where you wake up and just don't want to do anything productive, so I read a great deal and watched Deadliest Catch (kudos to those fisherman cuz I couldn't do that job) and then Brian and I watched "Into the Wild." Very good movie but a sad ending...those true story movies usually are.

Today, Brian and I went to a car show in Coral Springs and did some weekly grocery shopping. I decided to hit the gym this evening and let's just say, the healing is still in progress. No, I did not jump in and overdo it completely. I managed to get 30 min on the ellipse, 5 min on the stairstepper and 20 minutes on the treadmill. Most of the time, I had to keep my arms on the rails since my arm was aching but, I just needed to get some movement in these legs! I'm feeling sore now so I think a nice, hot bubblebath is just what the doctor ordered and tomorrow I'm going to schedule a massage to loosen up the muscles.

Hope everyone had a great weekend!

iPod Dilemna

I've had my iPod Nano for a little over 2 years and it seems that, in this short amount of time (and only 3 months after the warranty has expired) it has decided to start crapping out on me. I admit that I do use it on a regular basis...car, exercise, even at work...but I did expect a music device with this price tag would have a longer shelf life than 2 years. I have gone through 2 sets of headphones, which I believe are about $30 each and now the iPod's battery seems to be going bad. Even if I charge it overnight, the battery never fully charges and it loses steam after a few hours whereas it used to last a full day or more without recharging-this being if I use it at work all day and for exercise in the evening.

So, my dilemna is-do I send it in to Apple so they can charge me $60 to recharge the battery (which takes about a month) or do I dish out more moola for a bigger iPod with more memory and forget the little guy. I could always go with a different MP3 player but, already having iTunes installed, I don't want to have to start a song list from scratch.

Decisions, decisions....

It's Back!

Yay! Woo hoo! I had been waiting for months for this glorious....The Office is back! Yepperdoozie, new episode aired tonight and it was quite the riot. Many a chuckle from me tonight. It's so good to have some new ones to watch because I've about run down my DVDs of the older episodes-yep, slight addiction, I'm contemplating therapy.

Next week it's a new season of my other favorite, Workout on Bravo. April is going to be a good month.

Bad Girl

So, since I've been out-of-commission with working out due to these lovely injuries, it appears that my mind/body has also decided to give up on eating well, too. Wouldn't want to favor one or the other...no, not a good reason, is it. Since 3-31, I have not been eating very well at all. Not only is there too much food but it's not the best quality either. Example: lunch was a turkey sandwich and yogart with almond slices....and a Twix bar. This evening I had a nice, yummy bowl of spagetti with a 1/2 slice of garlic bread.....but I had chips and french onion dip while I was preparing the meal. Bad Girl!! No!

I think it's time to get back on the good food wagon so tomorrow I am going to start eating healthier foods again. I have a fridge full of yummy fruits and veggies so no excuses. Time to be a good girl again.

Back to Reality

After my chaotic week last week, it was almost nice to head to work today...in my lovely rental car. Actually, it's pretty comfortable and it's only for a month so I've decided to look at it as I'm saving the miles on my truck. The dealership came and picked up my baby today (yeah!) so, once they write up the service order and have me come in for some signatures, she can start her healing process.

Work went by pretty well today..probably due to a large portion of the staff being out today so I was on the phone a lot. Keeps me out of trouble, even though the clients are usually filled with unhappy news. It's a tough job to listen to everyone's misfortunes but every once in awhile I get a real SOB who screams and yells and then I get to have some fun!

The neck is still a bit sore but my concern is the arm. Still very sore and hurts whith excessive movement in the shoulder, elbow and wrist. I must have strained those poor ligaments pretty good. I'm trying to be a patient person but I really want to get back into my exercise routine again. Maybe I'll just do some stretches or lower body workout. Don't want to put pressure on the arm and do further damage.

Tonight I'm just going to take it easy and probably read a couple chapters in my book and clean the kitchen. Hopefully I will have some more goals lined up for tomorrow.

Later gators!

It's Just Not My Week

Okay, so you know about the accident, then waiting 5 days before the adjuster came to look at the truck, then there was the incompetent medical doctor and the out-of-control thyroid problem...well, I figured this would be the end of the bad luck reign. Hahahahaha, not quite-nothing real serious, just stuff to add to the fire. BJ and I both have bicycles, which we haven't ridden since we moved here nearly 2 years ago, so, I decide we should air up the tires on them so they are ready to ride when my arm is in good shape again. BJ's bike is in good condition but, somehow, my back tire has four or five spokes broken. How the hell? Upon closer inspection, BJ notices it's not just the spokes but the rim is bent, too. Something must have hit the bike or it was damaged in the move, so now we have to fix the tire before I head out for a ride. Gee, good thing I didn't want to go this weekend...and then yesterday, I was sitting by the pool and decided to use the skimmer to clean some debris and it freaking broke. That's it! I'm not touching anything valuable until this unlucky streak is over!

Beyond that drama, it's been a quiet weekend. We rented some movies last night and watched Alvin and the Chipmunks, which was a very cute movie. I managed to straighten up the house, get the laundry done and prepare dinner for tonight (slow-cooked pot roast w/the fixins) and I'm going to get in some more reading today. Toodles!

And How Was Your Day?

Finally! The adjuster came out today around 2pm and checked out my broken vehicle. Sounds like it's going to be approx. $8500 worth of damage to fix, more if the dealership finds any extras and should take 24 days to fix. They will come and pick the truck up on Monday so, barring any more catastrophes, I should have it back beginning of May. That first truck payment seems so unfair since I only drove the car for two weeks! At least we are getting somewhere now, though.

The earlier part of my day was spent getting medical and dental records from my prior doctor/dentist since I will no longer be doing business with either again. After the medical fiasco on Monday, I couldn't wait to find a new doctor, which I will be seeing on Wednesday. Good thing, too, since I read through my records and saw my test results for my thyroid that were taken in Jan. Results I never saw since they have a "no news is good news" policy. That's great when the news is good news but was not good in this case. Seems my thyroid is not responding to the drugs and my readings are off the charts for my TSH and two different antibodies-I'm talking way off the charts here. I am in a worried/pissed off state now since this info should have been revealed to me months ago. I have a feeling I will have to see the endocrinologist for another ultrasound of my thyroid real soon. To be positive, I guess the silver lining is if the doctor hadn't been so incompetent as to lose my business, causing me to seek a new doctor and get my records, I would not have found out this info. So I am looking at it that way and hoping they can fix this puppy. No wonder the scale hasn't budged-I didn't have a chance!

Like they say (whoever "they" are) when it rains it pours. I got all the crappiness this week so hopefully next week will be smooth sailing. Now I'm planning for a relaxing night, maybe a movie-Leatherheads looked pretty funny.

And how was your day?

Thursday, April 3, 2008

Now I'm Getting Cranky

Remember me saying the claims adjuster was coming today to look at the truck? Yeah, he never showed. BJ took half a day off from work to be here and, when we had not heard anything by 3pm, he called and the guy tells us, "Sorry, the computer crashed this morning and the guy couldn't make any of his appointments." So, you knew about this and didn't call. ASS!

Now he tells us he will try to have the guy come out tomorrow at 8am and will call before close of business today to confirm. It's 8pm. They closed at 4:30pm. Crystal is not a happy camper.

Car Accident Drama

This is sooo not the way I wanted to start the week, but what can you do. Life happens. So, the accident occurred Monday morning at 7:45am. I was stopped on the bridge on SW 10th St behind a panel truck(just like a moving truck) when I get slammed from behind by an SOB driving an SUV. I get thrown to the front of the dashboard, whipped back into the seat (whereby my favorite hairclip breaks-sigh) and then since Mr. Wonderful hit me so damn hard he pushes my brand new baby into the panel truck as well. Asshole. After I chant some obsenities to myself in the car, I get out and ask if everyone is okay and dumbass calls 911 (he actually asks me if it's 911 or 411...now you know what I'm dealing with here). Cops are on the way and we assess the damage. Panel truck seems fine, his SUV is totalled, front end pushed way in, and my baby is quite the sight. Back end is smashed in, bent the floor of the trunk in, twisted some bar underneath, stress marks in the plastic, all reflectors broke (no lights amazingly) and the front is messed up pretty good, too. No airbag deployment, probably due to it being a rear-end hit.

Cop arrives, takes statements. The SOB states the sun was in his eyes and he didn't see me. Cop gets his cell# to check his records and see if he was on phone/texting and gave him a ticket. Tow truck guy arrives and recommends I have it towed since air bag could go off if I try to drive it. I talk to BJ who says to give it a whirl so, when I'm cleared to leave, I drive it the .25 miles to work (so close!) and BJ arrives to assess damage of me and truck. At this time, I'm still living on adreneline. Called insurance company and reported accident and told boss I wouldn't be in today-she already knew as half the staff drove by and saw the accident. BJ then followed me home and, once we stopped here, the radiator started leaking-not drivable any more!

The afternoon was spent talking to the claims department and went to doctor appt. We waited 1 hour and when I finally see the doctor he tells me they don't handle car accidents cuz their insurance doesn't cover it-WTF! Then he states if I pay him $80 he will treat me. I decline cuz this does not sound ethical at all. Basically, he just didn't want to have to go thru the insurance companies. Last time I go there.

Instead we came home, I rested and let the pains set in and we went to the ER about 7pm. By 11pm, after seeing the doc and getting x-rays (negative) we headed home. Tuesday and Wednesday have been filled with pain. Thank goodness for vicodin or I wouldn't have made it. My left side got the brunt of the hit and my left arm, hand, shoulder, etc has been mostly immobile since monday eve. Today, although still very painful, I at least have some range of motion back. The neck is still pretty tender but will hopefully heal nicely-if not good by next week I go back in for a CT scan.

As for the truck, she is still in the driveway waiting on the adjuster to take a look, which should be sometime this afternoon. I just want to get this all taken care of and behind me asap.

That's been my week in a nutshell. With the time off for recovery, I did manage to finish my book, The Monsters of Templeton. Pretty good book, keeps you entertained. Now I've started The Virgin Lover, which is about Queen Elizabeth I. Got to skedaddle-all this typing bugs the arm so it's time for some rest. Toodles.
