Short and Sweet

No big reflections or anything from this gal. 2009 was a good year overall and had its share of successes and disappointments. I met quite a few of my goals this year and missed out on a couple of them, which tends to happen when you have 47 freaking goals :)

So, what's in store for 2010? I have a couple things up my sleeve...

  • Carribbean cruise to Grand Turk, Half Moon Cay and Nassau in 10 days-woo hoo!!
  • Back to school on Monday-yeah!
  • Continue with my fitness regime and maybe start including some new challenges
  • Finish the Princess Half Marathon and get my shiny medal
  • Bridesmaid in my best friend's wedding in September
  • Still eyeing up those trapeze classes....
  • Books to read
  • Family to see
  • And whatever else may come up.
Happy New Year everyone! See you on the flip-side...

Registration Complete

I waited as long as I could, but when I saw the race was already 70% full, I whipped out the credit card and confirmed my spot in the 2010 Disney Princess Race.

I'm committed now! So, that means I need to dust off the training schedule and get my butt out there and start logging in some serious miles. I've been slacking the last couple of weeks but now, with payment in place, I think I've got the monetary motivation to get me moving again.

The registration actually asked who your favorite princess was. I chose Cinderella, of course. I just love her gown! So pretty!!

Friggin Sore

So, in anticipation for the new year and all the wonderful goals I will prepare for 2010, I decided to purchase a couple new exercise DVDs at Target on Saturday. I got two of Jillian Michaels' DVDs (cuz I love her) for a mere $10.00 each and decided to try out one of them yesterday.

I chose "Banish Fat Boost Metabolism" dvd first cuz it just sounds bad ass. It consists of a warm up, 40 minutes of circuit training (7 circuits) and a cool down. I breezed through the warm up and the first couple circuits with no qualms at all. In fact, there was a bit of smugness on my part at the easiness of the exercises. I started to think Jillian was being too nice...these were just going to smoothly.  And then the bitch picked turned on me. And kicked my ass. And tried to make me cry. There were mountain climbers (on the ground and standing up), high kicks, kickboxing moves, ab workouts and other exercises she must have bought off of Satan himself. I ended the workout good and sweaty and cursing her existence. Just the way I like a workout to be.

After my workout, I was still on an exercise high so I went out for a walk/run interval session, alternating between walking and running every half mile and ended with some good stretches.

Which leaves me to today. I am sore. Muscles that I forgot I had hurt today and the thought of getting out there for a quick 3 miles seems daunting but I think it must be done, f for no other reason than to loosen up my poor little muscles a bit.

Jillian, you didn't disappoint. Hate you today. See you tomorrow!

A Step Back Into Childhood

Today I decided to try and finish up my Christmas shopping and, being an avid book reader, I decided to head to the bookstore and see what I could find for my niece, Morgan.

Total time warp people. I spent about 20 minutes in there just reliving my childhood through all the great books I read when I was young. The Ramona Quimby books, Bridge to Terebithia, The Secret Garden, etc. So many memories of hiding under my covers with a flashlight and reading long into the night, praying that I wouldn't get caught being up past my bedtime. It makes me want to reread all those great books again....like The Boxcar Children. Loved it. Just loved it.

So, to start Morgan off, I got her the original series of Winnie the Pooh books. My sister used to love Winnie the Pooh and I thought these would be great books she could read to Morgan. I think I will make it my mission to keep my sweet, little niece stocked up in books...that and Barbies, of course.

Another Week Goes By...

Good grief, I can't believe another week has flown by and we are only a week away from the Christmas holidays. So much left to do and so little time to get it all in. So, what's been up this week:

  • No exercise, that's for sure. I bowled Monday night, which was a lot of fun and a nice change to the week, but left no time for exercise, Tuesday I was at the school getting things squared away and yesterday I was too lazy. So, I guess I'll, um, start tomorrow.
  • We have our work Christmas party tomorrow so that means very little work to be done and a whole lot of eating to be done instead. Yippee!!!!!!!! Hope there are some refreshing spirits too!
  • Wilson had another case of the allergies over the weekend and had to be taken in to the vet on Mon. cuz he was breaking out in hives and crying. Poor little guy...he get's such bad allergies in the winter and spring months down here but he's back on his medicine and seems to be back to his old self.
  • We are watching our friends' dog Annie and she is such a good girl! Can't wait for the rain to stop so I can take her for a walk...actually she tends to take me for the walk-that girl can move.
  • I finished the 6th Harry Potter book and just started the last one in the series. Can't wait to see what happens, the last book sure surprised me!
  • I still have to register for the Princess race-only 77 days, 3 hours and 47 minutes to go! (I'm not obsessive, I just checked the website)
  • Oh, and only 25 days till we set sail on the cruise!!!! Woo Hoo!!!!!!!! Maybe I should make sure I have the time off from work.
So, this weekend I think I will finish up my Christmas shopping, get my hair cut, get back into my running routine, clean the house, and do all the other little things that are sure to pop up. Back to Harry Potter!!

What's Your Motivation

So, since the Princess race is a mere 3 months away, my bff/running mate (who is flying down from Minnesota for this run-yay!) and I have been trying to motivate eachother with some quotes. We've come up with a few we like:

Running is a big question mark that's there each and every day. It asks you, "are you going to be a wimp or are you going to be strong today?"

If I am still standing at the end of the race, hit me with a board and knock me down, because that means I didn't run hard enough.

I see you. Sweating. Breathing hard. Head down. Shoulder into it. How your clothes fit. How the crowds part. I don't have to meet you. Just want to be like you.

Run every race like it's suicide and it's a perfect day to die.

It's as simple as left, right, left, right, repeat

And a favorite so far....

There is nothing to be intimidated about - it's just another long run where a few more people show up and they all happen to wear numbers.

Still Here...

Just been busy. So, where are we at:

  • Brian ventured out to the stores at 3:45am on Black Friday and got us a new computer and a new tv for the bedroom.
  • The tv was a lemon and was returned for a new one. Success!
  • The computer was a friggin lemon and after a ridiculous number of hours trying to diagnose the problem, talking to tech support (idiots) and fighting w/Best Buy, the computer was returned (with many swear words following in its wake) and the old computer continued its reign for our tech world.
  • I ran about 20 miles in the last week and feel pretty good about it, although I'm wondering if I may have a shoe problem as my toenail seems to be separating on one foot, causing me to get annoyed and stressed out about how to prevent its inevitable departure. Not running is not an option anymore!
  • All Christmas decorations are up both inside and outside the house. Looks freaking great!
  • I baked cookies and bars yesterday and then began eating them in earnest. Kinda feeling like a blimp right now-no wonder I rarely bake.
  • After a week of hating Best Buy, we headed back and purchased a new computer, which I am happy to say is working wonderfully. Now, I just have to get my stuff to transfer from one computer to another and I will be a happy camper.
  • Now, I am just getting ready for this upcoming week: getting computers switched out, upcoming birthday, registration, cleaning house and preparing for Christmas party. And lets not forget running!!
On that note, I shall depart and enjoy the rest of my Sunday night...after I finish my chores, that is.

Happy Thanksgiving!

What a great morning it has been so far. I got up around 6:30, fed Wilson, put on my running gear and headed out for a nice 4 mile run. It was nice and cool out there (still humid) and there was hardly anyone else out there. I think I only encountered 8-10 cars on the road my whole way and a few fellow runners and walkers getting in their exercise before the big feast.

For this run, I tried something different. Last night, I put an audiobook on my iPod to try when running. I chose The Reader, cuz I love this book (having read it a dozen times, at least) and I thought it would keep me interested and I it worked. I was engrossed in my book and had no troubles finishing my 4 miles-usually I'm constantly staring at my Garmin, waiting for the next mile to pass-but today, I just kept listening and plowing ahead. Some people have trouble listening to these because of the readers themselves but I'm so focused on the story itself that the reader doesn't bother me. I think I made it through chapter 7-can't wait for the next run to pick my book back up again.

Now it's time to get ready for the big Thanksgiving feast-lots of good food, good friends and good times. Should be a great afternoon and I can guarantee I'll be stuffed! But let's not forget to be thankful for all our blessings today. I am thankful for my wonderful family, my new niece, Brian and friends both here and far away. I am thankful to still be employed in these tough times and for good health. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone and have a wonderful day!

Mind Games

Tonight, I ventured out for my 3 mile run and, for the first time in about a week, this run went pretty well. I actually felt like I was moving instead of dragging ass like my last couple of runs. So, like the good student that I am, I decided to tack on an extra half mile to my running tonight. I didn't race it, which is how I usually like to end my runs, but took it at a nice pace and got to the house with a smile on my face and my garmin saying 3.60 miles. Boo-ya! That felt pretty good and all because I pushed through that first half mile.

That first half mile is when I play mind games with myself. It's when the wheels start turning and I come up with my excuses on why I should just forget the run and head back home for icecream instead. Tonight, my thoughts ranged from: it's too freaking humid out....my foot hurts a little, wouldn't want to make it worse....maybe I'm still too full from dinner, I should go home and rest a bit....and finally to SHUT UP AND JUST DO IT! So that's what I did. And it went just fine, even a bonus half mile at the end.

But I think I'm going to put a book-on-tape on the iPod-maybe a nice murder mystery to entice me. Then, not only can I put the mind games to rest (hopefully), but I can push through my moments of boredom and get past the 4 mile mark. I'll have to see what I can find.

Moody Monday

Monday has been everything one could expect from a Monday. I attempted to wake up early but didn't-which I blame on a night of tossing and turning-then there was the coffee dilemmna. I am on some new meds and now feel nauseous for several hours/all day and coffee gives me raging headaches. So, I've had about a half a cup today compared to my normal 3+ cups. I guess the positive spin on this is I may kick the caffeine habit by the end of the year! Work was so-so. I have so much to do I can't even see my desk. I've started telling people that I'm building a big fort to account for all the files piled up everywhere. Funny enough, the work overload gives me a sense of peace-job security baby! After work, I came home famished and whipped up a nice dinner of chicken breast w/some cheese and mushrooms, some rice and a veggie. So yummy! I think I'll take Wilson for a little stroll and then catch up on some of my programs before calling it a day.

As for my doctor's appt. on Saturday, the doc prescribed me some more meds and wants me to go to physical therapy for my neck. He also gave me some exercises to try at home till I get in to see the phys. therapist. I think I'll try the exercises out for a week or so and see how I do. I did make it out for a nice 3.5 mile run. I am still running so freaking slow...it's got to be one of these meds wearing me down. I feel like I'm dragging out there but I'm getting it done so I'll keep pushing onward and upward. I'm hoping for a nice 4 miler tomorrow.

Wilson summons...time to power walk w/a puglet!

A Tough 3 Miles

Well, my goal to get up this morning at 5am? Not successful, kiddies. I was up before the alarm but I could already tell I wasn't feeling the whole "get up and be productive" vibe, so I reset the alarm for 6am, grabbed the heating pad for my neck and dozed off for another hour. But, after a very loonnnggg day at work, I came home ready to hit the pavement.

I did a nice 5 minute walk warm-up and then started my garmin. Right away, I could tell this was gonna be a tough run. My legs felt like they were trying to run through quicksand and I know it's because I took some hydrocodone earlier today (since nothing else works for these blasted headaches!) and I was still feeling those sluggish effects from the meds. Nevertheless, I decided to push through the sluggishness and kept going. My end time was just over 35 minutes. As you can see, a pretty slow time, even for me. I checked each mile and, while I normally tend to get faster with each mile, tonight was just the opposite. My last mile was 12:36-craziness! But, even though it was a slow run, I am happy I got out there and ran and now I feel more energized for the rest of the evening.

But I am totally setting that alarm for 5am again tomorrow morning. Maybe a swim will entice me to get my butt out of bed...we shall see.

Alarm Clock 1 / Crystal 0

Well, as you can probably tell from the title, I did not jump out of bed this morning, hop into my running gear and head out the door with a big freaking smile on my face. Nope, instead I woke up 10 minutes before the alarm, pondered how cool it was that I got up even before my alarm went off, and then reset the damn thing for 6am. Cuz that, peeps, is how I roll.

In my somewhat meager defense, I have been in a constant, daily battle with some wicked headaches for the last week. They consume my whole head and neck and refuse to go away even with my attempts with ibuprofen, aspirin (which I can't even stomach) and a large quantity of Tylenol. So, after dealing with this for a week now and getting more annoyed by the day, I finally broke down and got a dr appt for Sat. Hopefully they can do something or I'm heading to a specialist cuz this is really hindering my running progress. I need to up those miles dang nabbit! I also need to get my thyroid rechecked so it can be a two-for-one deal.

So, with no morning run, I am debating going this evening but I may just take the night off and try for that 5am time again tomorrow. Chillin with a good book sounds like a pretty good idea right about now.

AM vs. PM

I was a good girl this morning and when the alarm went off at 5:10, I got up, put on my running gear and headed out for a nice 3 mile run. The weather this morning was wonderful-nice and cool whereby I could wear my pants and a tank top and be comfortable for the whole run. The stars were shining, the music was good and I powered through those 3 miles without any problems at all. I was happy all day knowing I got my workout in for the day and didn't have to worry about it this evening but now, at 6:20pm, I find myself a wee bit tired. Either I need to go to bed a little bit earlier or stick with my evening runs.

So what is better, I wonder? I enjoy the peace and quiet of morning runs: little to no traffic, hardly anyone walking or running at that hour and then there is the smugness of knowing my exercise is done for the day while other people have been sleeping this whole time. But I did notice that my time is a bit slower in the morning and I'm tired by the time I get home in the evenings. Plus, 3 miles is about all I can squeeze in for a morning run so if I want to get in some more mileage, evenings will have to do.

I think I will just take it day-by-day for now and see how I feel. Let's see what tomorrow's alarm clock brings: a "jump out of bed" morning or a "throw alarm clock across room" morning.

Very Productive Day

At work anyway. Since the end of the year is approaching, I've been given a number of "projects" to finish up by the end of the year. Basically, it's all the crap everyone else either screwed up, didn't complete, forgot to do (yeah right) or just got lost somewhere in the black hole. Yippee! Now they are all my problem...all 1251 files. I think I made it through about 100 of them before I started humming non-syllables to myself and had to stop. Then I got to continue with my regularly scheduled work day. The good thing is that my day flew by today; the bad thing is that some of these files are just ridiculous and will require way too much of my time. I think I should get some hazard pay for this.

I know there has not been a lot of exercise blogging going on here but my damn neck issues resurfaced early this week so I took the week off to heal a bit and plan to get back out there tomorrow. I know-see the doctor-yep, that's on my to do list.

Just heard Brian's truck pull up. Time to go to din-din! Happy Friday the 13th everyone!

New Title

With more to come down the road. I felt it was time to change the title of this blog to something more inspirational to me, so I picked Driven as that is how I've been feeling lately. Driven to get up off my ass (most of the time, anyway) and do the things I want to do, research the crazy projects I have on my list to accomplish, and get out there and do more.

For starters, I think I will sign up for the Princess Half Marathon by the end of the month. Still interested, Jess? Megs? Could be lots of fun chicas! P.S. Once I sign up I am sooo looking for my cute little tiara to wear on race day. Oh yeah, I'm going all out on this baby. Do you think a tutu is a bit too much? Pink and poofy one?

I also really want to sign up for a quilting or crochet class. My mother is domestic woman extraordinaire and can do freaking anything from create wedding cakes to sewing to working on farm equipment to being a college nerd and I want to follow in her footsteps. However, after doing some research, I have come to realize how crazy expensive these classes are. I think a looked up two of them in my area and they were over $100 per class, not including your supplies! Maybe my mom can give me some phone/email lessons.

I still want to do my trapeze class this year, too. I've just been waiting for the weather to cool down a bit. If not this year, then early next year for this one.

There are a few more things I'm looking forward to this year but I'm still sorting them out. It's time to be real productive and finish the year off with a bang!

Day Off

Well, I had today off due to the Veteran's Day holiday and I spent my morning in productivity with a doctor's appointment and then I headed to the mall to browse for Christmas ideas and pick up watches. Then I grabbed some lunch for me and Brian and headed home...and to total couch vegetation.

Oh yeah, it was total non-movement from the couch, except for a DVD switch, for about 4 hours. Lots of mindless TV floating throughout my mind this evening, which I am corralling with some delicious Bud Light before I have to head back to reality tomorrow. It was a nice day off and I hope to feel revitalized for the rest of the week. Yeah right!

Let's not forget all the veterans out there who have sacrificed their time and their lives for our freedom and to all the troops currently serving our wonderful country. You all are greatly appreciated.

Miscellaneous

Since I don't have one particular topic to discuss, I will just bore you with the mundane today-lucky you...

First of all, Carnival and I made up. It seems that when you have a travel agent listed in the past, they become your travel agent forever (at no additional cost to you) unless you speak with the travel agency and request them to remove the info themselves. Good to know...two months later! So, the cruise is paid up and now I've just got to fill out all the info and get everything printed. Only 62 days to go!

I got my hair cut yesterday. Took off about 4 inches (so it's shoulder-length) and added a butt-ton of layers and some side bangs. I think it's a pretty cute cut but now I'm forced to actually do more than throw it up in a ponytail. I may have to comb it once in awhile now.

I got in 3 good runs this week and ran 4 miles today at Tephord Park. Sometimes I get sick of my regular route and need to get out there and check out the new scenery. At least today was much cooler and breezier than last time I ran there, although I have realized that I now need to find a good headband to run with cuz my new bangs were flying everywhere!

I'm nearly finished with the book 5 of the Harry Potter series. Can't believe I've only got two more to go! Anyone got any other good book series for me to read?

Well, that should do for my rambling. Now I think I'll figure out what to do about dinner and get ready for my Law & Order-Criminal Intent evening marathon to begin. Such a nice, relaxing weekend and only 4 work days for me this week-I get Wednesday off for Veteran's Day. Good times.

Put Down the Snickers and Step Away from the Candy Dish

Slowly...alright, now slowly turn around and step out of the kitchen altogether. Good girl. Now, I want you to go to your room...no, don't be looking back at the kitchen, there is nothing there for you..focus....good job. Okay, put on your running clothes. No, those are your lounge-around-the-house clothes. What? You think I don't know the difference? I've been around the block, you know. Stop complaining cuz I don't care. You've been a lazy ass for a week and it ends today. Now go! Good, we're making progress here. Yep, that outfit will do. Sure you don't want to wear a tank top instead? Well, I hardly think the middle finger was a necessary response. Get dressed. I said, GET DRESSED!! Alright, get your shoes on. Nope, not taking Wilson for a walk but nice try getting out of your run. Once again, I've been around the block. Get your watch and iPod. Whatever.....you freaking know where it is so stop acting dumb. Sigh. Middle freaking drawer. You are starting to piss me off. Okay let's go. Nope-not to the kitchen. No, you don't need a drink, you just want candy. Let's go. Baby steps, baby steps. Good....almost there.....and here we go!

Carnival Woes

Carnival has made my shit list. So, I got online over the weekend to pay my remaining balance...and searched that damn website numerous times to find out where to make my payment...and searched some more....walked away cursing.....whined to Brian.....came back and searched some more. No luck, could not pay the bill. So, I called my mom and asked her where she paid from...she tells me it was in Manage Bookings. Okay, I've been there 20 or more times but, hey, I'll try again. So it opens a window and tells me to make a payment I must call my travel agent or 1-888-Carnival. What tha????

So, this evening, I finally broke down, researched Google for Carnival's number and called them. They tell me I am registered through a travel agent and should call them. Huh, travel agent, well this is news to me. And if I did have one, they are doing a shitty job cuz I've never heard from them! I tried to explain to Carnival that I've got no stinkin travel agent and booked it online but they insist it's set up through one. So here's what I think happened. When I registered for this cruise, it took all my old info from last year's cruise and applied it to this one. Last year we, of course, had the cruise set up through a t.a. for Meg's wedding. Ugh! So frustrating! I called the agency, (after 5pm so left a msg) and hopefully I hear from them tomorrow. What a freaking clusterfu**.

So, here I am, trying to control my fuming rage with a chilled Bud Light since there's nothing I can do about this tonight. Hopefully it will all magically work out tomorrow. A girl can dream, right?

Oh, and Carnival? Your 888 number? Yeah, it has too many freaking letters so it is not a valid freaking number. How about we work on changing that? Thanks a bunch.

Ah, the weekend is here

I can actually admit that I had a good week at work. I trained a couple people on new job responsibilities, had some meetings, got taken off all my phone lines (woo hoo!) and got through many of those icky files on my desk. It was a good work week. Never thought I'd say that!

The weekend has started off pretty well. I went to the dentist this morning and am now good for the year, stopped by McDonalds for my coffee fix and made a quick trip to Publix for dinner fixins. Now the pot roast dinner is in the slow cooker, the coffee is half gone and I am ready to start the laundry before sitting down with a book for an hour or two. I plan on running 4 miles this evening and might even do some hula hooping. Other than that, no big plans for today. Tomorrow is going to be a shopping day since I desperately need some new work and exercise clothes and I've put it off long enough.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Another 3

Well, that nice, cool weather was refreshing but fleeting and it has nearly flown by the wayside. Today was a bit warmer-back in the mid-to-high 80s and I could feel it in my run this evening.

I was actually looking forward to running tonight. Whoa, when did that happen? Me, look forward to lacing up the shoes and hitting the pavement? Wow-it's got to be my dreams of the tiara medal pushing me forward. Although tonight was a wee bit warmer and much sweatier than my Sunday run, I pushed myself harder tonight and managed to finish my run about 2o seconds faster-yeah me! After the last two days of running 3 miles, I notice my 2nd mile is my slowest, like 10-15 seconds slower. I don't know if I relax more or what but I made it up for it by pushing through in the last mile and shaving off some time. Overall, it was a good run and I felt pretty good when I was done. I'm supposed to do another 3 miles tomorrow night and then 4 on Sat. per the HM training program I'm following.

I have you in my sights, my pretty little medal! Did I mention I put a pic of last year's medal on my phone for inspiration? Oh yeah. A little madness goes a long way.

A Refreshing 3 miles

Today was simply glorious...and all it took for Sunday to be a glorious day was waking up to a temperature of 58 degrees. Love it, love it, love it!! Brian and I were up just after 7am, had breakfast, went grocery shopping and then did our respective chores: his-outside, mine-inside. I was all done with the house cleaning and most of the laundry by 1pm so I spent the next couple hours sitting outside in the glorious weather reading the fourth Harry Potter book (just can't put them down!) while Brian finished yard work and had his garage time. I then checked in on my beloved Vikings and watched them get lucky with another win against the Ravens. I'm glad they won, but it could have been so easily lost. Guess the football gods were in our favor today.

After much pondering, I finally got my running gear on, did some stretching and went out for my 5k run. The first mile was tough...some shin issues and my foot has been bothering me but I pushed through. It's funny-someone's shirt at the 10k last week said running is a mental state and we're all crazy! Well, I can definitely attest to the fact that it's a mental state cuz I really wanted to turn around or just walk but told myself to push through and, after the first mile, I was feeling really good and had no trouble finishing my 3 miles. Day 1 of HM training down and tomorrow is a rest day-for running anyway. We'll see if I get ambitious for something else.

I Want the Crown

Or is tiara more princess-appropriate?

Now that the Race for the Taste 10K has been successfully completed, I am debating on what my next race will be. I am thinking the new Wine and Dine Half Marathon (which has replaced the afore-mentioned 10K) is a definite choice, but it is nearly a whole year away. I know me-with that much time to "train," I will most likely slack off until a month or two before and then try and hurry up and add mileage. So, since my running high is still, well, high...I think I am going to go for the crown, er..tiara and I'm planning on doing the Princess Half Marathon in March 2010.

This race brings all my favorites: Disney princesses, pink clothes, a great benefit and a tiara medal. How can I go wrong?! But, before I race to sign up, I have to complete a mini-challenge: run 4 days a week for the next month and increase my mileage until I can run at least 7-8 miles at one time without wanting to throw a temper tantrum along the street. If I pass, I can sign up by November 15, if not, then no tiara for me.

So that is my running challenge for the next month. I am doing this because, although the 10K was lots of fun, it was a lot of hard work for this former sprinter to handle since me and distance running have it out for each other. I shall overcome!

Maybe if I wear my medal when running, I'll become more inspired. Hmmm....

Crazy Sportsweek

Can I get a "hell yeah" for my wonderful Vikings? Last night's game against Green Bay was great. I'm not sure what was best-how good Favre was, Peterson's speed or Jared Allen's kick-ass quarterback sacks! I loved it all, although it did make for a late school night. Oh well, work sucks regardless if I'm tired or not.

Tonight continues the Minnesota sports saga with the battle between the Twins and Detroit Tigers. It's tied in the 11th inning and I hope my boys can win this baby. Fingers crossed!

As for me, I did not get my exercise in this evening but opted instead to watch these last few innings of the game and enjoy a few Coronas. Good times. I'll be good tomorrow :0)

Lazy Sunday

Well, I didn't get around to doing too much today. I was up by 8am and caught up on some saved Law and Order episodes, finished reading Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and took a nap. I did manage to get some house cleaning and laundry done so I was a little bit productive :)

This evening I think I will start in on the next Harry Potter book and get ready for another work week. Yay. My focus for this week is going to be running. I want to get at least 3 good days of running in before we leave for Disney on Saturday. I'm annoyed with myself for not training better for this race but it's a week away now so I just have to suck it up and put in a good few runs this week, I guess. At least it's at Disney and I'm with friends so it will be a good time no matter what!

Alright, time to go prepare a Mexican feast and take the puglet for a walk before my lazy evening starts.

Friday Randomness

  • I think I just ate a quarter block of sharp cheddar. It was scrumptious.
  • Sooo glad it's Friday!
  • I have a busy Saturday planned so that means I can relax tonight, right?
  • I finished the first Harry Potter book and jumped right into the second one. Lovin it!
  • Now, of course, I am going to have to get the movies.
  • Hmmm...what to do for dinner....
  • I need to put some major miles into my running this next week or I am screwed next Sunday.
  • Wilson is down 5 pounds-yay!
  • And he has wrecked 3 of my floaty toys this summer from running on them. I totally blame the pool guy.
  • I really want to go shopping!!!
  • I am obsessed with The Office, Criminal Minds and Law and Order: Criminal Intent
  • I have not lost one stinking pound in 5 months. THIS IS WAR!!
  • Alright kids, I'm out before someone's head starts spinning from reading this. Happy Friday everyone!

Harry Potter Mania

Yep, so I'm a wee bit behind the times but who cares! I ordered all the Harry Potter books last week and they came in today. Yay! So many books for me to read! So excited! The good thing about waiting so long to read these is I have the whole series at once and don't have to wait patiently for the next book to come out and, now that they've been out for quite awhile, I got them all for a good price!

So my evening has consisted of some light cleaning, making banana bread (one loaf to go) and reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Even more funny about the books is I've never even watched the movies so it's all new to me!

Gotta go, chapter 2 is calling my name!

Natural-Born Runner?

Not this girl!

Some people are born to play piano, some are great at chess and others make great runners. I have accepted that I am none of the above. I went running for the first time in about 20+ days and it was, how shall I put it, not pleasant. For one, it's still hot and humid out-not as bad as a month ago-but still a bit stifling for my taste. I think by September, I am just sick of the heat and humidity and am ready to move on to cooler times. Hopefully I can rejoice a bit in another month or so.

Anyway, I went out for a run this evening and it was a struggle right from the beginning. Since I haven't ran in awhile, my legs and lungs had to acclimate themselves to the whole process again and I only made 2.5 miles before I threw in the towel. It was not a stellar performance. Now, this is not me trying to get all down on myself (Megs...) I'm just stating facts. I know I will never be a natural-born runner and this process will always be a struggle for me. But, I think that's part of why I keep doing it. It's a challenge to get myself to push through 3 miles or more and I always feel proud of my accomplishments when I do achieve a running goal. It just sucks when I revert back to my early running struggles after taking too much time off. Note to Self...20 days is too long to go without running.

At least I am a swimming rock star :)

So Tired

It's only Wednesday and I am already exhausted! I have given up on thinking work is going to get easier and have accepted my fate there. Bottom line is there is just too much work and too many attorneys and judicial assistants to argue with for me to keep up. Thank goodness for coffee!

Only 19 days until the 10k and I haven't ran in nearly two weeks. I seem to go in spurts lately-one week I'll get out there 4-5 days and then I stop cold turkey. I hope I can get myself motivated to squeeze in a run tonight or tomorrow before work. Yeah, cuz that 5am alarm has been working wonders for me this week. No wonder I'm so freaking tired. All I want to do is curl up on the couch with my book, read and watch some tv. Maybe that's just what I'll do. Screw productivity! Sometimes a girl just needs to be lazy.

Okay, I'll at least hula hoop for awhile, then I'll relax.

On a Bender

A book bender that is. I've been a blogger no-show for quite some time these last couple weeks and I am totally blaming it on the books. No, I'm not cramming for any tests or studying for the sake of expanding my knowledge..this here is strictly fun reading. Last week, I finally finished Breaking Dawn, which was an excellent book that I could barely put down, even when at work, and now I am almost finished with The Constant Princess by Philippa Gregory. I really enjoy reading her books now and then. This one is about how Katherine of Aragon came to be Queen of England. I'm in the last 80 pages or so and would love to finish this one tonight! My next read is going to be The Time Traveler's Wife, which I had briefly started before but set aside for my historical read.

This all stems from my recent book shopping expeditions, which resulted in several books bought, which are all staring at me from the book shelf just begging to be read. I shall get through you all!! Alright, gotta run or I'll never finish this baby before lights out tonight. No, I'm not obsessed...just dedicated!

New Recipe Sunday

So tonight I featured Chops-On-Top Pork and Stuffing Supper. This was a relatively easy dinner to make with only a few ingredients needed...my kind of recipe. I cut up some pork chops into 1/2 inch thick slices, coated them with a honey mustard combination and cooked each side for about 7 minutes. While they cooked, I cut up carrots into thin slices and, when the chops were done, I set them aside and put the carrots, Catalina dressing, stuffing mix and water into skillet for about 15 minutes until the carrots cooked a bit. Then apple slices and the chops were placed in the skillet, covered and they sat there for about 5 minutes until the biscuits were ready from the oven.

It was a pretty good meal but I would have nixed the apples and added more veggies instead. Plus, I was supposed to add the stuffing at the end but I didn't read so well (drinking wine while cooking) so the stuffing was a bit mushy for my taste, plus the carrots could have been a bit softer. However, the flavor of the meal was pretty good and I will probably make this one again, but with more veggies and less apples. It's nice to try new things, though.

In other cj news, I am almost finished with One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. This book is pretty entertaining. I like to think I would act the same way in McMurphy's situation-less the glass-breaking moments, that is. I got to enjoy the book for about 3 hours this afternoon while floating in the pool. As for this evening, I think I'll try and finish the book with my Little Black Dress chardonnay and watch some Bears football.

P.S. Vikings RULE!!

Glorious Saturday

No, I really didn't do anything special today, which is exactly why it was a glorious day. It's nice not to have anything planned-just a day to do with as you wish. I was up around 7am and headed off to Wal Mart and Target for a little shopping/errand run (had to get the new season of The Office!) and then headed to the bookstore for a couple new reads. As for the bookstore, have you seen the movie, Coraline? I was waiting for the bookstore to open and there was this lady who looked just like the "other mother" when she turns into a spider. No, I'm really not exaggerating that much. She was very, um, interesting to look at. She had the walk of a spider lady and the shape, too. I did manage to stop staring long enough to browse for a couple books and picked up The Green River Killer and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

The afternoon was spent doing laundry and playing in the pool between threats of thunderstorms. I also got about 50 pages into one of my new books (which is actually quite ridiculous cuz I am already reading The Time Traveler's Wife and Breaking Dawn but, hey, I like to multi-task) and watched about 9 episodes of The Office.

Now it's time to get ready to go to dinner with friends at Tijuana Taxi Company for some yummy margaritas and Mexican food. Hopefully the thunderstorms stay away-all bark and no bite is fine with me.

Much Ado About Nothing

That about sums up my week. It's been a stressful week at work with way too much to do and not enough time to get it done. Plus, I work with idiots so that hinders my progress. I think I only made it out for one run this week since it starts raining about a half hour after I get home every. day. this. week..and evidently, if I can't run, I just won't do any exercise! In my defense, all these changing weather patterns give me terrible headaches and it's hard to think straight let alone run or swim. I'm hoping to get back out there tomorrow morning for a nice a.m. run-as long as it's before 9am.

So, I think it's time to rent some movies, kick back and relax. Happy Friday!

Treadmill Run

I had been planning to run outside again last night, but the weather was atrocious. I was driving home from work at about 25 miles per hour in the torrential rainstorm wondering, "Did I miss something on the weather channel? Is there some tropical storm barrelling through Florida right now that I don't know about?" There was crazy-high winds, monsoon rain and stupid people with flashers on-nothing like a challenging ride home to end the work day.

So, since it was obvious the rain was not going to let up for my outdoor run, I headed to the gym for one instead. I have two choices that are both pretty close to me. One gym I use for my swimming b/c the pool is awesome, usually pretty vacant and indoors while I use the gym on University for my cardio/weights workouts. The "U" gym is a bit older than other other one but seems to have more equipment and isn't spread out on different floors so I prefer it for my running pleasure. The only downside is the parking lot. Well, as long as you aren't worried about your safety, I guess it's alright. There are no freaking lights to be found in the parking lot so it's pretty dark out there. Me being a bad-ass from the rez, I knew I would be fine...I'd just use some good rez moves on anyone if need be.

Although it was 9pm and had been raining, the gym was still pretty busy but I did find a treadmill and got started. I did a 5 minute warm-up and started running, keeping up my pace for the first 3 miles at .5 incline. After 3 miles, I increased my speed for another mile and then did a cool down for another 7 minutes or so. All in all, it was about 4.5 miles. I thought the gym would keep me from sweating profusely but, alas, that was not the case. I guess I'm just a sweaty little mo' fo' when it comes to running. Thank goodness I remembered my towel (which went sailing off the machine only once during my run).

All in all, it wasn't a bad run, but I find it hard to get past my three miles not because I'm overly tired or in pain but due to boredom. I just get really bored running and music only keeps me interested for so long. That's something I'm just going to have to deal with, I suppose, or find some way to entertain myself. I'll save that dilemma for another day.

Free Mondays

Holy crap! I don't have bowling! Tonight is the first night I haven't had bowling in a year-minus a Monday here and there for vacation. Crazy! Although I miss it a bit, it was kind of nice to come home after a truly hellish day at work and relax for a bit without rushing through dinner and heading to the bowling alley.

So what did I do this evening? Nothing too exciting. I did about 25 minutes of hula hooping, but added a little twist tonight. See, sometimes to shake things up, I will do some squats while hula hooping, but tonight I tried to do some lunges. Now, these were not deep lunges like I would do at kickboxing (ugh) but still pretty decent seeing as I am hooping while lunging. Got to keep it interesting ya know! I managed about 5 of them before I went back to the normal swing of things. After that, I laced up the running shoes and went out for a 3 mile run. Even though I came back hot and sweaty, the run felt really good. I think I got out a lot of the work frustration...if only it would stay away!

Now I think it's time to relax, read a bit and maybe catch a little TV. Peace out

New Recipe Sunday

Do you ever find yourself making the same meals over and over in the course of a year? Of course, some recipes are timeless classics and will jump in the menu several times over the course of a year, but I find myself making the same things over and over out of cooking laziness, lack of time (to prepare meals) and being stuck in my comfortable cooking rut. But I am trying to remedy this, one Sunday at a time.

Today was Roasted Potatoes with Rosemary/Garlic and Chicken with a Rosemary butter sauce. It was scrumptious. The potatoes cooked nicely in the oven and were a little crispy on the outside while being nice and mushy on the inside. The chicken was cooked nicely and the sauce had an excellent flavor of rosemary buttery goodness. The only thing was the thickness of the sauce. It turned out a little runnier than I would have liked, but something has to turn out less than perfect or there would be nothing to improve on! We also had a nice house salad with lots of veggies for a side. Overall, it turned out to be a very nice, simple meal to make (only took one hour prep/cooking time) and I think I'll put it in the "keeper" pile.

On another similar note, I read Julie & Julia by Julie Powell this weekend. This is such a cute book! It's so true that some recipes are simple while others are easy-yes there is a big difference. The reference to Silence of the Lambs was priceless, too. Just a great little read. I started it Saturday morning and finished it this afternoon. I think it helped me propel my recipe idea, although this thought had been brewing for quite some time.

Anyway, it's about time to tackle the dishes and enjoy some downtime before another work day approaches.

Starting to Worry...

The Race for the Taste run is approaching fast (Oct. 11) and I am still stuck at the 3 mile mark. I know what the problem is: it's too damn miserable to run. I think I have the ability to run more than 3 miles after all this time, but the hot, sweaty temps are holding me back. I am just miserable when I'm out there. At least I know Orlando is a little bit cooler than here and it will be early Oct. so hopefully the temps will be cooler, too.

I'm thinking I need to spend a couple days a week running on the dreaded treadmill. I know this isn't the best choice since it always feels like a run takes twice as long, but I really want to have the confidence of knowing that I can at least make the mileage without my legs giving out at mile 5 or so. Or finishing last. So, I think I'll try out the treadmill on Saturday and see how it goes. If I bring a book to read, the time should go faster.

As for today, I got my obligatory 3.1 miles in and I feel pretty good. Now it's time to relax.

Wanna Swing?

Who says exercise has to be boring?

I stumbled upon this in some magazine. There's nothing like a flying trapeze workout to get the blood pumping! See, I love heights...especially jumping from them. So, what better way to get a good workout and play around in the air than the flying trapeze?!!

The only downside is it's in Miami, which is a bit of a ride, but maybe I can schedule a class on the weekend or something. I think it would be so much fun! Any takers?

New Running Spot

Since I usually do my runs before work or after 8pm, I tend to run in my neighborhood. It takes about 4 times around to equal 3.5 miles, which means my scenery can be pretty boring, especially when I run it all the time. So, today I decided to expand my running horizons and took on a new location.

I decided to try out Tephford Park today since I've passed it many times on the way to bowling and it always looks like a nice running spot. It has signs telling you every quarter mile, which is nice if you don't have a Garmin with you, and lots of bench areas and a little play area for kids. The pathway runs in an oval and, if I remember correctly, it is 1.5 miles around, which was perfect for my 3 mile goal. The park was nice and clean and the canal runs right along one side of the trail-I love looking at water while I run.

The only downfall to the run was the time of day. I decided to head over there at 9:45...in August....when it's freaking 90+ degrees with a blanket of humidity. It was so hot out there I felt like I was running on the sun, especially when I was facing it directly. I've never been so excited to see a bottle of water in my life. I think my face is still beet-red from the experience and my whole body feels drained. Yep, sometimes I just never learn my lesson :)

So, although I will definitely head over there for another run in the near future, I think I'll do so either no later than 7am or after 7pm. Being that miserable just ruins the whole running experience...but at least it's done for the day. Now it's time for the pool!

I don't want to talk about it!!

All better

I can't wait to get new pictures of her. She's already three months old and is rolling over, laughing and smiling even more. I'm one proud auntie.

Hurray for Thirsty Thursday!

I am so happy Thursday is here. That means only one more painful day of work before the weekend. I can do it. Use the force...

It's been one of those crappy weeks where nothing seems to go right, more work piles up and a couple of my coworkers are being complete assmunches. Go be annoying somewhere else, please! I have work to do!! I am completely exhausted just from the stress level at work, which makes me feel lazy at home since all I want to do when I come home is park myself in front of the tv and be a zombie for a couple hours. I did have a little pow-wow with the boss yesterday about my work and he made it clear that he felt I could handle it all and he has complete faith in me. Good for you buddy! I bet if you pay me more, I will have a lot more faith as well. Let's try it out.

I've been MIA from kickboxing since I got back. I've been busy wheedling down my to-do lists and getting some other things done in the evenings so I haven't put the time in for any kicks and punches. I'm starting to miss it, though, so I hope I can get myself back in the game by next week. At least I've gotten in some running and swimming so I don't feel like a complete slug bug but I know I can do better.

So, I think I'm going to go straighten up the house, play with Wilson, take care of a couple things and then join my buddy for some refreshing spirits. Mmmm....bud light......

Tuesday Tidbits

It is Tuesday, right? I feel like I've been through an entire week in just two days. How about a brief recap:

  1. We totally kicked ass in bowling last night and swiped 20 out of 22 points to clinch 3rd place. Last night was the last night of bowling and, since I have some other things planned for the upcoming months, I will not be doing the fall league.
  2. I got in a nice 2.5 mile run Sunday evening and did a 25 minute swim Monday morning. I was nice to get my butt back in the pool. I haven't swam in months and sometimes I forget how much I enjoy it. I'm hoping to squeeze in another swim sometime this week.
  3. Ah, work. You keep me amused. Yesterday the bosses fired someone so security has been there yesterday and today (just in case) and now even more work is piled on my plate cuz I am such a rock star. Then this afternoon, the ambulance had to be called due to one of my coworkers was having lots of chest pains associated with gastroenteritis-poor thing! So, it's been an eventful week at work. Then there was the voodoo letter one of our attorneys received. Love it!
  4. Brett Favre changed his mind and decided the Vikings were good enough for him.
  5. I just made tilapia for lunch tomorrow-yummy!
  6. I really need to start studying.
  7. Only 155 days to cruise and 53 days till race day.

On that last note, I think I'm gonna pull out the hula hoop and read for a bit. I can't decide if I want to run tonight or tomorrow morning so I'll decide after my hooping session. I have a feeling I'm going to choose tv over my running shoes tonight.

Weather Excuse

So, the weather worked out perfectly for me yesterday, in terms of using it as a good excuse to do nothing. I woke up ready to do lots of house cleaning (okay, some), running and going for a swim, maybe even some time left over to float in the pool. This was when the weather was nice and pretty outside; however, the blue skies changed quickly and we were left with crappy thunderstorms on and off all day due to all these "tropical disturbances" out there in the Atlantic.

So what did I do? Nothing! I shouldn't say that. I did manage to get the laundry done and make a good breakfast and dinner, but the rest of the day was pure sloth. I think I watched about 5 or 6 movies ranging from Disney classics to the movie Monster. There was no running (rain), no pool time beyond my 11 minute attempt (rain) and no swimming (um..it was raining too hard to drive to the gym?) so my exercise consisted of lifting the remote and getting up to pick new movies.

But, it was great! Although I like to be outside enjoying the fresh air and soaking up some sun on the weekends, a nice rainy day gives me a chance to chill in the house and hide out under the covers. Today is a beautiful day (so far at least) so I think I'll go hula hoop outside for a bit and plan my day. If it stays sunny, there will be pool time!

Time to Focus

Except for work, my mind and body have still been running on vacation mode since I got back nearly two weeks ago. It's a bit ridiculous...I know I need to be getting back into my regimen with exercise and eating but I just keep telling myself, "I'll start tomorrow." Okay, well I've been home almost two weeks now so that's about a dozen tomorrows, so I think that's enough now. I think today I will do some running and swimming and maybe a little bit of hula hoop time. I also need to make some meals for next week-it's so much nicer to have some stuff prepared for the week instead of foraging through the fridge every morning.

I have managed to get some stuff off my to-do list this past week so that was a pretty good thing. I've almost got the whole list completed..yeah! This weekend I would like to clean the car and do some house cleaning as well. So, I think I'll make today a busy day so I can really relax tomorrow. It's time to focus and get back into a routine again...although that pool does look inviting....

Hello 5am

I guess the third day is the charm. I had set my alarm for 5am everyday this week. Monday I shut it off in defeat and rolled over; Tuesday I never even heard the thing, thank goodness I woke up to Brian's alarm, but today I bounced out of bed when the alarm went off. I think I'm still on a to-do list high, since I plowed through quite a few things yesterday, and I want to keep my high going so I can finish my list by the end of the week. Either that, or my sugar high from eating too much chocolate cake yesterday is keeping me awake.

So, I think I'll go out for a nice morning run..that way I can feel smug at work knowing I finished my exercise already. Morning workouts also seem to help with my appetite, too. I tend to eat better and behave myself when I've had a morning workout; I guess since I started my day off on a good note, I don't want to ruin it with bad food choices.

Time to lace up the sneakers and hit the pavement!

155/62

As some of you may know, I not only love my to-do lists (which have started to get bigger and bigger again) but I also love me some countdowns. I think countdowns are a good way to focus on a goal and keep yourself in check. Sometimes they work for me and sometimes, not so much. But I am determined and must persevere! So, I have two going on right now.

62 - This one is a running goal for me. Now, I have done a few 5K races and I have been running a nice, steady 3 miles or so for quite some time now. I can blame the heat, humidity, etc. for my stagnant mileage but the bottom line is I've been in my nice, cozy comfort zone for quite some time and now it's time to get moving again. So, along with a few friends, I have signed up to run Disney's Race for the Taste 10K in October this year. I think this is a great way to increase my mileage, it gives me about 2 months to do so and I have some good friends who are running it, too so we should have a blast. Plus the excellent food, wine and potential for rides keeps me in the Disney zone. That means I've only got 62 days to get my ass in gear and go the distance. It can be done...as soon as I find my running shoes.

155 - This one has a little more breathing room and it's mainly a weight-loss/get in shape kind of goal. After telling my parents about our great cruise for Mark/Meg's wedding, my parents got the cruise fever. So, on Jan. 11 of 2010, we are going on a cruise with them to Grand Turk, Half Moon Cay and Nassau for 5 days. Should be a great time and I really want to be in my best shape for this one. I have a cute black dress I would love to wear and, if I'm a good girl and exercise, I should be able to get into it without looking like a sea lion.

So, these are my two countdowns going on right now. Hopefully, they will keep me motivated to get my running in and keep my hands out of the cookie jar, except on rare occasions like parties, holidays, seeing friends/family, weekends....well, there's always hope!

Fun Family Trip

I was reading my last post and must correct the hours: it's actually more like 62 hours roundtrip, but at least there were plenty of stops on both ends of it so it really wasn't so bad. We headed out on 7-22 and made it to Cave City, Kentucky before stopping for the night. Just a cute little tourist town with lots of cave outings and little shops. The second day, we made it to Brian's family in Chicago and spent the night there before heading up the the Twin Cities for my cousin's wedding. The wedding was very nice and the reception was at an Irish pub in St. Paul where I had many Michelob Golden Lights. We celebrated until they kicked us out of the bar-it's always fun to see my dad dancing to Eminem.

Saturday was a little family reunion brunch and then we headed to my sister's place for a few days. I got to see my beautiful niece, Morgan, for the first time and had lots of good Auntie time. I would have packed her away and brought her back here but I don't think breast milk ships too well. While there, Morgan was baptised and we had a little party for her. Brian and I visited some friends and then we headed up to my parents' place near Mahnomen, MN. The house and farm have definitely had some changes done since the last time I was home. I got some good family time with my parents, sister, niece and the grandparents before we headed back to Chicago.

We spent the last 5 days of our visit with Brian's family. We went to the WhiteSox game, saw some friends and went to his family's summer place to chill for the weekend where they had a big polish dinner with all the fixins and we played lots of card games and hung out with his family and friends. As with most vacations, there was a lot of food, alcohol and laughs. It was a great time and, as usual, went way too fast. The weather was beautiful-it's so nice not to sweat when you walk outside! So, overall the trip was a big success and Wilson was a perfect little passenger the whole way there and back. I think he was just as tired as we were when we returned from all the extra attention lavished on him.

Now, it's back to the grind. Work hasn't been too bad this week, although only having three days helps. I have some household chores to do and I want to get a run in so I'm off. Happy Thursday!

I'm Back!

After 42 hours and approximately 4400 miles round trip, I am back home from visiting family and friends "up north" in Chicago and Minnesota. It was a great trip and, although the driving was extensive, I enjoyed the excursion (granted Brian drove most of the time-what a trooper). The good thing is I'm unpacked, the laundry is half done and the dog is resting comfortably on his couch. Think I'll just relax and try not to dread the disaster that's awaiting me at work tomorrow.

I'll give more trip details later on...too tuckered today. Hope everyone has been well and I will be catching up soon!

Sunday Shopper

Today flew by! I was up by 7:30 this morning and got into my workout gear and headed out for a nice 3 mile walk followed by a 1 mile run in this ridiculous humidity. Seriously...I was covered in sweat (yummy!) by the time I got to the 7-Eleven, which is about a quarter-mile away from my house. But that's Florida in July so I just suck it up, do my workout and then whine and complain afterwards. It's a nice cycle.

After that, I got ready and Brian and I headed to Walmart for all our road trip necessities and snacks, dropped all that off and then headed to Sawgrass Mills mall for some shopping. The best and, in my opinion, only time to shop there is right when it opens. Then you have about 2 good hours before the place turns into a crazy madhouse. So, we went searching for a dress for me and some new summer clothes. Found the summer clothes and a couple pairs of shoes but no dress. I did get new running shoes so I was pretty happy about that. They are blue and silver/gray and I can't wait to get out there and try them out! Whenever it stops raining that is.

So, no luck finding a dress at Sawgrass so we headed to Coral Springs mall for some shopping and I was able to find a couple I liked in Macy's. The tough thing is most dresses down here are total summer sun-dress styles. Well, the wedding is in MN and it's been a chilly summer so I wanted something with a little more coverage but I found a cute black dress and I have a couple in my closet I'm going to bring along, too, just in case I'm not feeling the black dress vibe. So, that is taken care of. It was nice to be shopping for smaller sizes that actually fit. I still have a long way to my end goal, but at least I am seeing results along the way.

So, I think I've got everything I need for the trip. Now I just need to get off my lazy butt and start packing. Um...maybe tomorrow...or Tuesday night. Right now I need to figure out what to do about dinner.

Cleaning/Errand Day

Today was not the most exciting day but at least I can say I got some stuff done. I got up late at around 8:40 this morning, which is late for me cuz I'm usually the fruit loop who is happy to be up at 6:30 on the weekends so I can take Wilson for a walk and read. No such thing today...it was way too hot today to do much exercise-like activities so I started in on the household chores. I got the laundry done, cleaned the floors, kitchen and straightened up the rest of the house. While I was doing this, Brian took Wilson to Pet Smart for a doggy spa day.

After I finished my chores, Brian and I did a little shopping while we waited for Wilson to be done with his grooming appointment. I got a couple new tops but am going to have to hit the mall tomorrow for some dress shopping. We then picked up a very crazy dog from his spa appointment and headed home whereby an hour long nap and a scrumptious chicken dinner ensued.

So, now I think it's time for some ice cream. Maybe I can talk Brian into a Cold Stone run. I could use some cake batter ice cream right about now.

Victory!

After many months of standing on the scale, looking down and seeing the same damn numbers staring back at me, today I finally got my wish. I broke through that dreaded plateau and moved those numbers down! Ha Ha!! Screw you scale, I win today! Victory is mine!!

Okay, enough gloating..but I am pretty happy to see that scale budge a bit, even if it was only a couple pounds, it's a sweet, sweet sight to see. Can I get a yee haw!! I was a good girl last night and went out for my 3 mile run, which had to be one of the top 5 worst runs I've had over the past year. The humidity was brutal (still is) and even my poor little Garmin fogged up. Not right, people. But, I got out there and got the job done, and did about 20 minutes of hula hooping while I watched Law and Order cuz I'm all about the multi-tasking.

Now I'm off to a buddy's house for din-din and probably a drink or two. It is Thirsty Thursday after all...can't disappoint.

No Rest for the Weary

Work was crazy today. Just one of those ridiculously stressful days that flew by yet seemed to take forever. I swear the courts were out to get me today because I had calls right and left setting hearings, cancelling others, JAs requesting motions to appear by phone, defendants' confused (shocker!), etc. Aaahhh!!! I left late due to a last minute hearing cancellation and it was one of those moments where I got in my car and visibly slumped down in the seat from stress release. Only 4 more days of work before vacation so I can tough it out till then.

Since I left late, I wasn't able to make it to kickboxing tonight and, although there is a 7pm class, I'm going to take the night off from that and will hula hoop and run instead. I feel like a nice, long run anyway. I'm still trying to get in a couple days running a week. It's crazy how much harder it is to get the mileage done with the hot temps but it just means I'm sweating that much more, I suppose. Yay!

So, yesterday I said I was going to do a lighter read for my next book but I couldn't find anything I really liked so I'm going to read The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. I've had this book for a month or so and, since I'm on a memoir kick, I figure I might as well jump into it. So, I'm going to kick up my feet and read for a bit, pay some bills, put the dishes away and then do my workout.

Or watch reruns of Law and Order...

A Little Bit of Nightly Torture

Yep, that about sums up my kickboxing classes-a little bit of torture. I walk in there nice and dry, no muscle aches, no heavy breathing, no cares in the world. However, after an hour of punching, kicking, weights, abs (thankfully no push-ups today) and squats, I walk/drag myself out of there hot and sweaty with a desperate need for water and a stiff body.

And I LOVE IT!! The instructor is great and my favorite type-total kick-your-ass drill sergeant material. I have a great time and the hour flies by till, before you know it, time is up and you're gasping for air..and water...and a towel.

So here I am: sore, tight muscles yet ready for class tomorrow. Go figure. Maybe he'll make us do evil lunges..something to look forward to.

P.S. I just finished this really intense book about Eating Disorders called Wasted by Marya Hornbacher. She is an incredible writer and her journey from bulimia to anorexia and back is amazing. You can actually hear the pain in her words. Here's a paragraph:

You can subsist a long time, eating just a little. You can stay alive. That's how we all stay alive as long as we do, because we eat, just a little. Just enough to feign life. You can't stay alive very long when you're not eating at all, or when everything you eat is thrown up.

Sixty-one. ( Her weight)

And then the last shoe dropped. I bought laxatives. I bought laxatives and began eating a box of them every day.....

I was riveted to this one, especially towards the end. So, if you are into autobiographies, here's one to try but it won't be a laugh-out-loud one like some others. This one stings a bit. Now I think I'm ready for a lighter read. Think I'll go see what I got and relax for awhile.

Bowling, Work, Etc.

So, um...yeah. My performance at bowling tonight was pretty dang crummy. My average now is a 145 and I managed to bowl a 125, 124 and a stellar 119. It was one of those nights where you can' t find your mark at all, can't throw the ball straight, curved or in the general direction of the pins at all. It's sad and funny to say they could have blinded me for tonight's games and it would have gone better! Oh well, that just means I'll kick butt next week, right?

Now, to switch gears a bit, I've been doing my new job duties for about a month and a half and I can say with total certainty that I am not happy with the new responsibilities. I'm thinking of having a sit-down with the bosses after vacation to discuss my salary-and why there should be more of it-and if it gets flat-out rejected, I think I'm going to start looking elsewhere again. There's nothing worse than spending 8 hours at a job that is stressful and underpaid. Sucky.

As for exercise, I seem to be getting back into my groove-hopefully I can make it last longer than a couple weeks, too. I went running last night for about 2.5 miles. I really wanted to do 3 or more but it was already approaching 10pm so I felt safety should come first. Tomorrow is kickboxing and I'm totally gonna kick some ass!

Now it's time to unwind and get ready for bed. Too many late nights this past weekend. Me tired.

Nice Weekend

It's been another pretty good weekend here. Saturday morning I went to kickboxing class and got my ass beat for an hour, then Megs and I went for a healthy breakfast at Einstein's Bagels. I came home and cleaned/drained the pool and then spent a good 5 hours soaking up the rays on my floaty raft and reading a good book. Brian and I went out to dinner and then we went over to a friend's house to watch the UFC fight. All in all, it was a pretty good day but I was sure tuckered out by the time I got to bed at 2:30.

Today has been pretty low key around here. I watched Revolutionary Road this morning-very good movie and much like the book-and then hopped in the pool for about an hour or so and when I realized I was so tired I was going to drop my book in the pool, I came in for a nice 2 hour nap. So, now I'm up again, Brian's chilling in the pool and I'm finishing the laundry and catching up on things.

Only 10 days till the road trip home so I'm slowly starting to get things together, make my lists and get as much stuff done as I can. The lists are pretty much done, now it's just to make sure what's written down gets completed. We picked up a GPS unit yesterday and now I'm coming up with a list of things for me to do so I don't drive Brian crazy on the drive. Nintendo DS sounds like a good idea. He suggested I study...HA! I'm on vacation!!

I hear the dryer calling my name. Time to get back to my chores so I can enjoy my Sunday evening. Later gators!

4th of July Bash

Yesterday was a great 4th of July. The weather was cooperative, although ridiculously hot and muggy but no rain, at least and there was lots of good food, friends and stuff to blow up.

The good eats...

Friends....

and the Fireworks!!

Overall, it was a great time and I made sure to eat and drink way to much. Today was a nice relaxing day in the pool followed by a nap, dinner and a movie. Now that's a pretty good weekend.

Short Work Day

While most of you lucky kids got the day off today, I was at work bright and early this morning. The good thing is the courts were closed, everyone was in a pretty good mood, we had pizza delivered, and we got out at 2pm. So, although I had to be there for most of the day, it wasn't so bad. Plus, Brian was able to get all the yard work and errands done since I wasn't home to annoy/distract him.

When I came home, I got my swimsuit on and hopped right into the pool. It's been raining so much lately that the pool, with the sun glistening off the water, was too much to resist. The dogs patrolled the yard and I floated away. Then, we headed to Ruby Tuesdays for dinner (love the salad bar) and grabbed a few movies. We just finished watching Doubt, which I enjoyed a lot. I love Meryl Streep and she did an excellent job in this one. So, now I'm catching up on some things while Brian prepares the macaroni salad for tomorrow's shin dig. Maybe I'll go supervise...there's some mini cupcakes with my name on them.

Hi Guys

Nothing too exciting happening recently and I've been too lazy to blog. So what has been happening? Well, we are dog-sitting our neighbors' pug this week and he's a little hell-raiser! I did find his one weakness-he is terrified of my hula hoop! He actually hid in his cage while I was using it. Poor little guy!

I finished reading Wuthering Heights, The Scarlett Letter and Candy Girl. Now I'm back to Bleak House. This book is like Pillars of the Earth for me. Not exciting enough for me to stay interested but I am determined to finish it. Good times. I did buy three new books so when I flake out on this one (again), I'll hit one of them.

Have watched some movies: My Bloody Valentine, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Powder Blue. Still have the new Friday the 13th to watch. I love me a scary movie-although most of these are just gruesome, not scary so I'm a little disappointed. ( I grew up watching Silence of the Lambs, what can I say).

I have not been to the gym since my last post but I'm not ready to let go of my membership so I'm going to keep it another month with the stipulation that I use it a couple times a week or it's gone.

Sunday is my "new recipe Sunday" and last Sunday was Mom's lasagna recipe. It turned out pretty dang good. Brian wished I had made a bigger serving of it so I guess that's a good sign. I'm not too sure about this Sunday though, I may be hungover from the 4th of July bash. Will keep you posted.

Well, that about sums things up..and since my computer is being a bitchtart, I am signing out. Peace out kiddies!

Bad Gym Bunny

Me: Hi, my name is Crystal and I am a bad gym bunny.

Audience: Hi Crystal!

Sigh. I must be honest. I think I've only stepped into the cool air-conditioned doors of my gym 3 times this year. It's not that I don't enjoy going there...it's a really nice gym, clean, lots of classes offered, a good cardio/weight area and a great swimming pool. It's 5 minutes from my house and I drive by it every day after work. There's really nothing bad to say about the place.

What's the problem then? Duh....I don't know. I've been working on my running a lot this year, so I've been putting my shoes to good use out on the pavement instead of the cushioned cardio floors of the gym. I've got my hula hoop at home that I use every couple of days and a few exercise tapes that keep me entertained as well. I've been tempted just to cancel the damn membership but I just can't seem to do it. Why? Cuz I do love to swim and my backyard pool just can't compete with my mileage and I would love to take a spinning class now and then..and I love a good treadmill workout every so often...and I just can't let it go!

So, I've decided to give myself a gym ultimatum. Either I go to the gym at least 2 days a week for the rest of the month or that baby is going to be canceled, because if I'm not going to use it, then I should stop spending $$ on it. And that, my friends, is that. Maybe I'll go swimming today-my poor little gym bag is just waiting to have the dust bunnies swept off it. Even a treadmill run sounds good since it's already heading into the 90 degree range for the day.

After all, I've only got 32 days till the trip home. I've got some serious work to do!

Addicted to Dunkin

My new favorite drink: coffee coolata from Dunkin Donuts. I could drink these all day long, of course I'd be wired like the Energizer Bunny on crack, but that just may be a price I'm willing to take. I'm trying to limit myself to one a week. So, I've had three this week so far. It's working out quite well, don't you think?

Maybe I'm drinking all the coffee because I've been in serious slug mode all week. I think part of it's work and the other part is the weather. Work is still non-stop craziness so, by the time I leave at the end of the day, I'm exhausted. All I want to do is come home, sit down on the couch and not think for an hour or so. The weather is brutal now, too. It is so freaking hot outside this week I feel like I'm baking nicely in an oven when I go out. Even after the sun sets, the heat blanket remains. Lovely...and it's only June! Gasp!!

I'm planning on going for another sweaty run this evening. I finally remembered to wear my heart monitor on my Tues run and it showed my heart rate in the 140s when running...and that's after the sun had set for the night so I can only imagine what a midday run would be. I think I'll wear it again tonight and see where I'm at. I'm hoping to be able to push through at least two miles before my body gives up. Maybe all this caffeine will help.

Or maybe I'll just chill on the couch and catch up with all my shows. It is "Thirsty Thursday" after all...I wouldn't want to disappoint. See, I'm totally rambling. I must be tired. Maybe I should run out for another coolata. Just a small one, I promise :)

Total Redemption!

Tonight was bowling night. I started out like a dud but managed to finish as a warrior! My first game was, ummm...very sad. I only scored a 93. I asked my teammates to blind me for the rest of the night and said I would be the cheering squad. They laughed at me and poured me more beer. Mmmm....beer

Second game was a bit better. I got no strikes whatsoever but I still managed to maintain a decent score with some kick-ass spares and lots of nines. I happily finished with a 145.

By the third game (and third pitcher) I was in prime bowling form. Strike here! Strike there! I was finally on fire baby! I finished this game with a sweet 215. This was my first game in the 200's for league and the first time I got a 4-bagger (4 strikes in a row). Good times baby!

So, that about sums up my night. Now I'm gonna go enjoy my bowling high before it's time for bed. Nighty night!

Sweltering 5K

This morning I got up at ten minutes to 6am, threw on my clothes and headed to Quiet Waters Park for the Race for a Cure 5K. There was a nice turnout, clear skies and the humidity was in full effect. This is only my second 5k event: my first one took place February of last year so it was much cooler and it was still a little dark when we started. Not so for this one. The sun was high in the sky by 7am, I was already sticky from the heat/humidity combo and I rushed to get ready so I didn't eat or drink much of anything beforehand.

However, it was still a good time. The race went throughout the park and around a couple small lakes so the views were nice while running. I also beat my time by about 4 minutes from the last 5k I did so I felt pretty good about that.

Some things I will do differently for the next one: try to eat a little something before the race cuz I was dragging for awhile, and wear a tank top and shorts-no sleeves or jogging pants cuz it's just too freaking hot for that nonsense! Other than that, the race went well and I'm happy with the results. It's nice to have a good run done before 8am, an iced coffee already consumed and some pool time to look forward to. Happy Sunday!

A Few of My Favorite Things

What a lovely Saturday it has been and I got to enjoy a few of my favorite things today. This morning, I straightened up the house after Brian and gang left to shop for fireworks and then cleaned up the patio/pool area. And since it was so nice and sunny today, I got my book, sunscreen and pool floaty and hopped in the pool for some good sun soaking. It was glorious! Even with all this rain we've had, the pool is a warm 84 degrees, only 2 degrees away from my perfect 86. I floated around for most of the morning and afternoon, only stepping in the house for laundry cycles and to check out the fireworks loot...guys, we are gonna have some fun this year!

Around 3pm or so, the clouds got dark and we were hit with a doozy of a thunderstorm so Wilson and I went in the house for a little nap ( I love sleeping during storms) before heading out to the bookstore for a few new reads. I do have some at home that I haven't read yet but I wasn't feeling the vibe from any of them. I got Wuthering Heights-Emily Bronte, The Scarlet Letter-Nathaniel Hawthorne and Candy Girl-Diablo Cody. The next stop was Blockbuster for some movies and then a last stop at Dunkin Donuts for an iced coffee.

So now I think I'll sit down with a book and my yummy coffee and relax for a bit before movie time. Enjoy your Saturday!

Time Warp

I'm starting to get confused on what day it is. As one of my new duties, I have to get all the files prepped and ready for the attorneys' upcoming hearings, trials, etc. and these are always done two weeks before the actual date. So, I keep thinking today is the 18th and next week is the the 25th and this can be a bit of a hindrance when I finally step out the the office world and back into the regular one. It's good I checked the calendar closely when I got home cuz it's my parents' 32nd wedding anniversary today and I must remember to call them! Congrats to them!

As for my evening, I've got a workout planned, some Wilson time and then I'm off to a friend's house for a play date. Yeah! At least I think it's tonight...maybe I've got my days mixed up again.

Stressed

It's only Tuesday but work has been brutal this week! Due to my lovely "promotion, " I have a lot of new responsibilities to go with my old ones. At least before I was comfortable with my workload and could see the end of the tunnel. This week, the tunnel has been covered up with files and there's no way out! I just keep telling myself to take one thing at a time and go from there-too bad this approach really doesn't work in the legal profession. Damn me to hell for being competent!!

Since I feel like a bus just ran over me, I'm going to take a half hour or so to relax and read for awhile, while it rains...again. Then I think I'll head to the pool. I have neglected my swimming for quite some time but I'm feeling the urge to jump back in again. Swimming laps helps me forget about everything but the sound of the water going past me and a good cardio workout will do me good. Time to find those goggles!

Summer League

Now that summer has come around, it's time for a summer bowling league. Yay! This one should prove to be a good time. It's much shorter than the winter league, 11 weeks instead of 37 weeks, and there are only 16 or so teams. It was nice to see some familiar faces tonight as about half the teams were from the winter league, but there were also some new faces too.

I had a pretty good start with a 135, then stepped it up a notch for a 176 and finished with a sad little 110. The good news is our team kicked butt overall and got 18 out of 22 points. Score! We played a team that likes to scream and curse at one another...very entertaining. So, that was bowling night. Room for improvement but good times over all.

Now it's time to play with Wilson as the poor little guy has been cooped up all evening. I think I'll chase him around the house for awhile.
