The End of January? Already?

So, it appears this year is already racing by like a freight train. Feels like the new year just started and now we are already finishing up the first month. I figured it would be a good time to review how this month went in terms of accomplishments.

Well, for starters, I finished reading 12 books for January. At this level, I should have no problem completing my 52 book goal for the year, although I do think my reading will taper off once a full-time job reappears in my life.  Might as well enjoy the extra reading hours while I can!  I also started doing some creative writing short stories and have completed two of them so far.  I found a website that has a list of over 100 scenarios to write about so for the last two days I've picked one of topics and started writing.  Kind of a fun way to get the mind turning and much more productive than endless hours of tv.

Wilson has been on several walks, sometimes two a day, so he is a happy camper.  I've also done a few longer walks on the trails when the weather has been nice. Lately it's been a roller coaster...yesterday it got up to 72 degrees and today it's in the high 40's/low 50's.  Still better than those sub-zero temps back in MN! As for other exercises, I've been on the exercise bike a few times and did a couple exercise videos sporadically throughout the month. I am hoping I can get into a better routine in February.

Speaking of February, I've decided on a couple monthly goals: I am giving up the McDonald's coffee for the month and going to try and do the 30 Day Shred dvd too (well, for 28 days anyway). Other than that, it will be more job hunting, more long walks and hopefully a fun activity here and there.

Until next time...

Having time off is nice but... this point, I think I'd rather be working. Not just for the money aspect of it, but to feel like my days are actually productive. A girl can only clean so much before she's sick of it! Also, hanging out with fellow coworkers about nonsense stuff, griping about the commute, and discussing possible happy hours have actually been missed. I keep telling myself to enjoy this time while I can because when it's over, I'll be wishing I had time off again.  I know the biggest part of it is not knowing when I'll finally get back to work that creates some of the stress. It's a lot easier to enjoy free time when you know when it ends and, when you're getting paid for it, of course!

Today, I had to attend a meeting/workshop at the unemployment/job center location as part of my unemployment. They basically just discussed different options available, resume and cover letter writing options, and places to look for jobs. Nothing I didn't already know but NC requires it so I sat there and listened. At least it was only an hour and a half.  My reward was a large McDonald's iced coffee for the ride home on this beautiful day.  I did my job searching for the day and now I think I'll get outside and enjoy the weather...sunny and in the 60's....and maybe do some reading this afternoon.

Until next time...

Tuesday Tidbits

  1. My plan for the year is to read 52 books. Well, I have just started my 10th book yesterday and it's only January so if this pace keeps up, I don't think I'll have a problem meeting this goal. Of course it's much easier to get in a lot of reading when you're not working, which I'm sure will change soon enough.
  2. I've also been hard at work getting Wilson down to a getter weight range. With a change in food type and amount, as well as twice daily walks, he has slimmed down 5 lbs in the last few months and is only 3 lbs from a healthier weight. At least one of us is meeting our weight loss goals!
  3. As for my exercise plans, I have been taking it easy due to the foot issue, which I have no patience for at all, and been sticking with my exercise bike and Wilson's walks. I may start adding in some yoga since I have Jillian Michaels' yoga video since that is not too strenuous. Hopefully, I can get back into some more cardio exercises in the next month or so. I'd like to start doing the 30 Day Shred again.
  4. I love HGTV and DIY network and have been watching a lot of house projects on tv lately, along with my personal favorite, House Hunters International.  Since I have the time, I feel like doing some house projects here and there. Being renters, there is only so much we can do with the house itself, but some little touches here and there might be a nice change...and keep me busy!
  5. Anyone see the new show on Fox called The Following? We watched the first show last night and it was excellent! Having met Kevin Bacon several years ago, I always have a soft spot for all films or shows he is in so I was excited for this one. This looks like it is going to be a good show, although since it involves the story of a serial killer, it does have a lot of graphic scenes in it but not too gory since it's on Fox.
  6. Still addicted to McDonald's coffee. One of my 30 day goals is to give it up for a month. I think I might pick next month since it's the shortest. :-)

Until next time....

F is for Fracture

So remember how i had to stop training for the Disney marathon because of foot pain? Well, not only has the pain not subsided but has continued to get worse, more persistent, and spread further along the top of my foot. Since I am off work, i finally had the time to check it out and went to the orthopedic doc yesterday. Turns out I fractured my foot, most likely from running, and have to take it easy for awhile now. The doc tried to get me to wear a boot but i refused so we compromised with stretching exercises and down time and i have to have it rechecked in a month. If there is no progress, then i get the boot or a cast. Good times!

So, i guess I'll just have to keep relaxing and reading my books in between job searching. Guess it's good i am on a work hiatus ;-)

Book list to come soon...i am typing this on the nook and refuse to type that up with this keyboard.

Until next time...

Thursday tidbits

1.   The weather is beautiful here this week. Today it was almost 70 degrees with clear skies and looks like these temps are holding strong through the weekend. Hurray for perfect weather days. May have to do some hiking this weekend.

2.  Since i have more spare time than usual, i have been a reading machine! I have finished five books already since the beginning of January  especially since hubby bought me a new nook and i got a ton of gift certificates for barnes and noble for xmas. At this rate i should have no problem reaching my reading goal of 52 books.

3.  Did i mention i also got my library card?

4. I 've been doing lots of cooking at home and am going to start trying some new recipes again. We started shopping weekly for groceries and making a weekly meal plan, which seems to be working well so far.

5. I have almost completed my major house cleaning to-do list except for the stuff i don't want to do (windows...ugh) so now i am ready for a project list.

6.  I still love my McDonald's coffee though...enjoying one right now.

Until next time...

As some may know, i am one of the few, the proud, the unemployed and have been for exactly a month now. Due to a firm restructuring, my entire department was let go on Dec 4th of last year. December wasn't too bad with the pending holidays and our two weeks of travel but now that we're back, i am ready to get back to work again. Hopefully something will open up soon and i'll be back into work mode again.

While i'm on my down time, i have had time to clean the house top to bottom and organize every room in the house, minus the dreaded office room closet. I've finished two books this week and even managed some exercise time. Maybe i will even attack some projects i've been putting off for several months....or just keep reading more. A girl can only look for jobs for so long per day!

Well it's friday night so time for a glass of wine!

Welcome 2013!

A new year is upon us and thank goodness for that! There were some good times from 2012 including great family trips and exploring our new state but overall, it was a rough year and i am not sad to see it go.

So, for this year i have a few long-range goals as well as some easy 30 day challenges to keep things interesting.  My three long-range goals are:

1.  Find a great job that i enjoy doing

2.  Reach my goal weight

3.  Read 52 books this year.

Some of my 30 challenges include running 30 days straight, no alcohol, no McDonalds coffee, push up challenge, and a cooking challenge. I would also like to do some household projects and maybe a creative photo project too. The plan is to keep myself active throughout the year with lots of fun things.

As for today, i took down all the xmas decorations in the house while Brian has been working on the outside stuff. I've been catching up on my Disney movies too, having watched The Sword in the Stone, Alice in Wonderland, and now Finding Nemo since the weather is crappy outside.

Hope everyone has a wonderful 2013 with lots of good times!
