Friday Favorites

Fitness magazine. I enjoy the success stories, new recipes and different exercise ideas they give. The only downfall is the magazine only publishes 10 times a year instead of 12.

Sipping wine on the patio. There's just something peaceful about enjoying a glass of wine outside after a busy day.

Trail hiking. Probably one of the best reasons to live here in NC is there are actual hiking trails near my house, not to mention all trails one can hit in the mountains, which are only about 1-2 hours depending on where you're going.  Walking through a forest surrounded by nature will always beat the concrete slabs of sidewalks in my book!

Speaking of books, these are always a favorite for me.  I could spend an entire weekend enjoying a good book or two.  Looking forward to Jen Lancaster's new book coming out next week. She's always a fun one to read.

Swimming. My zen workout.

And let's not forget ice cream! My two favorites are banana cream pie blizzard from DQ and cake batter ice cream with M&Ms from Cold Stone.

Shakin Things Up

I don't know if it's because summer is right around the corner (ok, it's pretty much here) or if I'm just bored and need a little shake up but I'm feeling like making some changes around here. Since my foot injury, I haven't been very diligent with that whole working out concept and am thinking it's time to get back on the bandwagon again. Truthfully, other than a couple times on the bike, some dog walks, and swimming, my days have been mostly devoid of exercise. Now that the days are warmer and the nights are longer, it just feels like a good time to get physical. Cue Olivia Newton-John...

Okay, maybe not the leotards and tights but you get the idea.

Second, I feel like a new hairstyle or color is in order. I haven't cut my hair in about 9 months so it definitely needs a trim, maybe even some layers, and I was thinking of adding some highlights or just changing the whole color scheme. This can be a bit more tricky because of all that pesky chlorine I swim in weekly, but I think I can work something out.

Lastly, I could use a good summer challenge or goal to work towards for the next 3 months. Maybe a push up or sit up challenge, running challenge, something to get me motivated. Or maybe something like this?

 tough mudder pics's a possibility.
Although something else I've been checking out is right up my alley and I'd have over a year to prepare...
with this swimsuit of course  haha!
So, basically I am looking to shake things up a bit and try to break out of my rut a bit. How about you? Any plans for this summer or fun activities you are planning to do?

Wednesday Miscellany

Not too much time to write since I'm only home for a bit before heading off to swim lessons but figured you guys probably missed me these last few days so I better make an appearance ;-) haha!

So last week or so I mentioned that I have been on a pancake kick (which explains the battle between me and the scale) and have enjoyed them with cool whip (thanks Meg!), PB & J, french vanilla cream, honey, and several other ways. Today, having run out of pancake mix, I switched it up to french toast. They are so easy to make and require so few ingredients, just some nutmeg, cinnamon, egg and milk, and after a few minutes cooking on each side, I had an easy and delicious dinner which will keep me full through my swim lessons. Yummy!

Been listening to a lot of Dave Ramsey while at work and have learned quite a few good money tips.  Too bad I didn't start listening to him about a decade ago cuz I would be a financial guru by now!

I can't wait for the long weekend. I didn't take any extra time off but just having three days off with no swim lessons either will be glorious!  I'm sure one half day will be spent cleaning the house and doing all those fun grown up chores but then the rest of the weekend is for pure relaxation and enjoyment.  We don't have anything special planned, but maybe a day trip somewhere will be in order..we'll see how the weather holds out. I do need to get a wet suit so that's one thing on the list. Plus Nascar is here again this weekend, all the more reason to get out of town and away from the craziness.

Alright, time to get ready and hit the road. Someone has to teach these kids how to be superstar swimmers.

~Got any plans for the holiday weekend?

Five on Friday

1.  Last night was the series finale of The Office. Even though it lagged a bit in the past few years, especially since Steve Carell left the show, it has still been one of my favorite shows. I'm gonna miss it..thank goodness I have most of the dvds to enjoy!

2. I have been dealing with a nagging cough all week. No other cold symptoms, just the stupid cough leaving the voice a little worse for wear. The swim kids will probably get a kick out of it.

3.  It's Nascar time here in Charlotte. With two races on back-to-back weekends, the race track area is a small city right now. It's like WeFest around here. Since we are only a few miles from the track, my thoughts circle around one theme...thanks for visiting but when do you leave?

4.  My cousin Dana gets married this weekend. Happy wedding day to her! Wish we could be there to enjoy her special day.

5.  Everyone got their powerball tickets?

Weight Loss Edition

Summer's here again! Crap...I forgot to get in shape and lose weight before it arrived. Dang it!  Another winter's worth of good intentions down the drain.  Looks like I'm going to have to start getting all healthy and shapely with the heat and humidity. I suppose sweating can only help in the long run, right?

I've been on again-off again with the whole exercise-eating healthy plan.  As is typical of so many, I get myself fired up, do really well for about 2-3 weeks, and then remember that cupcakes are a gift from the heavens, and I'm back to warming my butt on the couch and catching up on the Real Housewives Whatever edition.

I'd like to say this time will be different. That I have a new desire to get in shape that will keep myself motivated and constantly in motion for the near future, but that's just not realistic. So, I'll just say that I'm going to get back on the exercise bike, start doing some morning or evening runs again, and maybe dust off that yoga dvd and see what happens.  I'd like to say being in a swimsuit every week should be motivation enough but we wear sleeveless shorty wetsuits so no skimpy suits to worry about. Score!

2mm Women's Roxy SYNCRO Short Jane WetsuitOoh la la!!

So much better than just a swimsuit and much warmer when you're teaching for several hours on end. However, it would be nice to drop a couple sizes and find my biceps and triceps again so I'll give this whole exercise thing another chance.  To help keep me accountable, I am going to try and give weekly weight loss editions to map my progress. Maybe even pictures of my strongs when they finally make an appearance.

I'm Thinkin...

Our minds are filled with tons of random thoughts throughout the day. Today, I kept track of some of mine. For starters:

1.  I spend 2.44 for my iced coffee and go approximately 6 days a week for one. That's almost $800.00 a year! For coffee! Man, maybe I should cut down on this...

(later at the drive thru) "yes, I'll have a large vanilla iced coffee."

Well, maybe tomorrow I'll skip it.

2. Peanut butter on pancakes is heavenly. I may never have it on toast again. What else can I put on my cakesters?

3.  The music from the ice cream truck driving around the neighborhood is absolutely horrid to listen to. I cringe every time I hear it.

4. Jennifer Lawrence totally deserved the academy award for Silver Linings Playbook. She was excellent in that movie.

5.  Listening to The Dave Ramsey Show and reading a book at the same time causes brain wave overload.

6. The ice cream truck is playing Christmas music right now. Seriously?!

7.  Totally contemplating eating the additional $1.20 daily redbox fee just so I don't have to leave the house and return the movie. Got two more hours to think about it.

8. Great. Now Joy to the World is stuck in my head. Stupid ice cream truck.

Alright, enough of that. Time for some reading, a walk with Wilson and the NCIS season finale. Later gators!

Sum It Up Sunday

It's been a busy week.  Legal job was same old, same old.  The weather was beautiful for most of the week so I enjoyed walking a bit during my lunchtime, which is always a nice way to wake up in the afternoon.

I put in quite a few hours at the swim job. Shadowing and teaching lessons on Thursday night, followed by training as well as more lessons and training most of the day Saturday.  Once the training is completed, my schedule will become more routine, unless I pick up subbing hours, so I can tough it out for now.  Added bonus is I get to do lap swimming for free now! Score! Now if only I could talk them into free scuba training...

Although work was pretty good, I can't say the same for my eating habits.  I think I had Wendy's chili at least twice this week, plus I vaguely remember scarfing down four cupcakes here and there too.  So delicious!  So, a trip to the store for lots of healthy snacks and a fridge full of good foods will hopefully keep me in check this week. I'd like to find a good protein snack bar that doesn't taste like chalk and isn't loaded with sugar. It would be especially good for those nights I go from legal to swim job.

I did manage to get in some good reading time as well and have just about finished my 25th book.  My pace has definitely slowed down a bit but I'm still ahead to reach my 52 book goal so I'll keep plugging away.  At least most of them have been enjoyable books.

Well, that's it for this week. It's a beautiful day so going to get out and enjoy the sunshine. Happy mom day to all the mommys out there!

Five on Friday

1.  I had my beloved Salsarita's for lunch today. I guess bringing it up on Wednesday reminded me how delicious it is. I had my chicken taco salad in one of the best taco shells ever made. Delicious!!

2. Speaking of food, we really need to hit up the grocery store. I think it's been about 3 weeks or so. All the healthy foods are long gone and there's been a little too much take out lately. Guess a shopping trip this evening is in order.

3.  It's definitely summer weather outside. Woo hoo! Time to find and dust off those shorts and tank tops and enjoy the outdoors. Perfect weather for running, too. May have to lace up the running shoes.

4.  Missing my sister and wishing we lived closer so I could stop over for a visit :-)

5.  Time for a margarita!  Enjoy your Friday!!

A Few of My Favorite Things...

I found myself humming this song from "The Sound of Music" today (awesome movie) and decided to come up with my own list of favorite things that I enjoy right now.

  1. My beloved Nook. It kept me entertained during my 3 month "vacation" earlier this year and continues to give me lots of reading pleasure. Plus all the other fun games and other time-wasters I can use it for on a daily basis.
  2. Flip flops. In Florida, this was basically all I wore for the majority of the year.  I even got the flops with the heel to meet dress code at work.  I love flip flops and could wear them year round, except maybe for running...
  3. String cheese. Best snack ever.
  4. P!nk. What can I say, this girl rocks!  She is strong and confident, a gymnast, singer, and has done some really bad ass performances.  Not to mention her love for tattoos. Bomb diggity in my book.
  5. Salsaritas.  This is a Mexican fast food joint around here (similar to Moe's) that has the best chicken taco salad ever! I used to go there on a weekly basis because of it's deliciousness.  In fact, I may have to stop by sometime this week. It's been awhile.
  6. The DVR. Being able to fast-forward through commercials? Love it.
  7. Fiat car. Even though some see it as a death trap (my hubby for instance), I think this car is so cute!  Also, since I have such a long commute to work, it would be perfect as a daily driver. Maybe hubs would like it more if I let him put some rims and flames on it :-)
  8. McDonald's coffee. One of these days, I will quit you my vanilla iced coffee, but for now, I enjoy one every workday morning...and most weekends as well...and some late evenings...
  9. Blog reading.  It's always fun to see what other people are up to and what they have going on in their lives.
  10. Inspirational quotes, especially fitness ones or ones about strong women. Cuz women rock, of course.

Back to the Pool

Wow, almost a month has passed...2013 is flying by so far! In the past few weeks, I picked up a second job for a few hours every week doing something I really enjoy. It's back to the pool to teach swimming lessons!

It was definitely meant to be. I went in to the shop to inquire about scuba lessons and walked out with an interview scheduled. After my interview (and being told i am fabulous), I walked out with a new job.

So, for the last couple of weeks I have been in training learning new job responsibilities as well as recertifications for lifeguard training, CPR, and First aid training classes. So far this place is great, wonderful coworkers, great kids, a fun atmosphere, and I will get to take scuba classes too. Score!
